2010 Subway Fit Fresh 600 Predictions – Betting Preview + Picks + Odds

Preview:  There are several ‘firsts’ taking place at this weekend’s Subway Fresh Fit 600 in Phoenix. It is the first night race of the Sprint Cup season, the first weekend of the year with no rain in the forecast, and the first time the race has been run at its new longer length – formerly 500 km, now increased to 600 km as a result of NASCAR’s new standard race start times.

Race: Subway Fit Fresh 600 – Phoenix International Raceway
Date: Saturday, April 10, 2010
Time: 7:46 PM EST (scheduled Green Flag)
TV: 7:30 PM EST on FOX

In addition, this is the second race with the new spoiler, which replaced the wing on the COT prior to Martinsville two weeks ago, but the first real test of the spoiler on a track where downforce plays a greater role.

Safe Bets:

1. Jimmie Johnson (3/1): Once again, Jimmie Johnson is the likely race winner pretty much everywhere until proven otherwise – but especially at a track like Phoenix, where he has won four of the last five races. Johnson has the most wins overall at this track, though he has far fewer starts than drivers like Mark Martin and Jeff Gordon, and by far the lowest average finish at 5.1. Of course, he is also leading the points, having climbed from 35th in the standings after Daytona to first in just six weeks.

2. Tony Stewart (10/1): PIR has been a GM- and HMS-friendly track in recent years, and Stewart-Haas Racing receives its engines and other support from Hendrick. Stewart has one win at Phoenix is 16 starts, but has finished second in this race three of the last four years. Tony was tenth on the speed chart in both practice sessions Friday.

Dark Horse:

1. Ryan Newman (25/1): In 15 Phoenix starts, Newman has three top-10 finishes, including a second and a third, although most were in a Penske Dodge. Last year with Stewart-Haas, Newman finished 16th in this race. Ryan was 19th in first practice Friday, but picked it up to third in Happy Hour.

Summary: Sunny skies and warm temperatures in Phoenix are creating a very slick racing surface and there were numerous spins and near-spins on Friday.

The team that keeps up with changing track conditions Saturday as the race transitions from daytime to evening to night will ultimately be the car in Victory Lane.

Race Date: Saturday, April 10
Location: Phoenix International Raceway, Avondale, Arizona
Pre-Race: 7:30PM ET
Green Flag: Approx. 7:44PM ET
TV Coverage: FOX
Track Type: Oval (375 laps)
