2010 Sour Cream Dips at The Glen Predictions – Betting Preview + Picks + Odds

Preview: Race number 22 of the 36-race NASCAR Sprint Cup season is the second and final road-course race of the year at Watkins Glen International. The schedule calls for just two practice sessions here, both on Friday, and qualifying Saturday morning.

Race: Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at The Glen – Watkins Glen International
Date: Sunday, August 8, 2010
Time: 1:18 PM EST (scheduled green flag)
TV: 1:00 PM EST on ESPN

As always, Sunday’s race will feature several road-course specialists subbing for their team’s regular drivers, including Boris Said, Ron Fellows, Patrick Carpentier, P.J. Jones, and Tony Ave.

Greg Biffle, winner of last week’s race at Pocono, had the fastest lap in both practices Friday, while Tony Stewart had the fastest ten-lap average speed in Happy Hour.

Safe Bets:

Tony Stewart (3/1): It’s hard to deny Tony Stewart’s stats at The Glen. In the last six races here, Stewart won four and finished second in the other two.

Stewart has the most Watkins Glen wins overall, five in 11 starts (Jeff Gordon has four in 17 starts), and the best average finish among drivers with more than two WGI starts at a low 5.3.

2. Marcos Ambrose (6/1): Ambrose, the former two-time V8 supercar champion in Australia, has only competed in two Cup races at Watkins Glen, but his talent is apparent here. In 2008, Ambrose started 43rd and finished third, and last year posted a career-best second-place finish.

Marcos was third on the speed chart in Happy Hour Friday.

Dark Horse:

1. Greg Biffle (25/1): Biffle is not normally thought of as a road-course favorite, but he’s driving with a ton of confidence right now and appears to have a very fast car this weekend.

Last year, Biffle had his best-ever showing at The Glen, starting seventh and finishing fifth. He also finished seventh at Sonoma back in June.

Summary: Jeff Gordon, while a perennial road racing favorite, was only 30th in first practice and 39th in Happy Hour on Friday. Gordon will have Scott Pruett on standby Sunday in case Jeff’s wife, who’s due this month, goes into labor.
