2010 Shelby American Predictions – Betting Preview + Picks + Odds

Preview: Las Vegas Motor Speedway is one of a handful of racetracks on the circuit that the NASCAR Cup Series visits just one time per year. NASCAR has been coming here since 1998, but the track was repaved in 2006 and reconfigured with the addition of progressive banking. Kurt Busch, who grew up in Las Vegas and considers this his home track, won the pole in qualifying Friday, with Jeff Gordon on the outside pole.

Race: The Shelby American
Date: Sunday, February 28, 2010
Time: 3:16 PM EST (scheduled Green Flag)
TV: 3:00 PM EST on FOX

A Busch’s 188.719 mph lap set a new track record, but cool temps and a new tire appear to be part of the reason the track was so fast. With rain in the forecast for Saturday, Happy Hour could be scrubbed and Sunday’s Cup race could start off on a green racetrack.

Safe Bets:

1. Jimmie Johnson (7/2): There have only been 12 Cup races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Johnson has won three of them – three straight from 2005-2007 – making him the winningest driver at this track. Although he hasn’t finished as well here the last two seasons, Johnson’s win last weekend in California suggests that the 48 team is off to a strong start in 2010.

2. Kyle Busch (5/1): Busch is the defending winner of this race, going pole-to-pole last year for the victory. After a rough start in his first Vegas race back in 2004, the hometown driver has had four top 10s in five races (his other finish was 11th), giving him an average finish of 5.2 during that timeframe.

Dark Horse:

1. Kasey Kahne (25-1): Kahne’s team has been inconsistent in Las Vegas, but he has finished as high as second (2004) and fourth (2006). Since a DNF in 2007, Kahne has had finishes of sixth and eleventh, and qualified 19th Friday. This has not been a Dodge-friendly track, but Ford has the most wins here for a manufacturer, which could work in Kasey’s favor since Richard Petty Motorsports switched to the blue oval this year.

Summary: Look for weather and tires to be two of the stories heading into Sunday’s race. Polesitter Kurt Busch is anxious to try and parlay his strong qualifying run into a win in front of his hometown crowd, while Jeff Gordon, who’s gotten off to a rough start in 2010 and qualified on the outside pole, is also eager to turn his season around. Gordon has one previous LVMS win.

Jimmie Johnson will be tough to beat after last week’s win and the fact he has won this race three times in the past (2005,2006,2007). As a long shot I would take Matt Kenseth at 20-1.
