2010 Samsung Mobile 500 Predictions – Betting Preview + Picks + Odds

Preview:  It’s been a good week for Tony Stewart so far. Last Saturday, his teammate and driver Ryan Newman won in Phoenix, Newman’s first win since the 2008 Daytona 500. Today, Stewart scored the pole for the Texas Cup race, his first pole since 2005.

Race: Samsung Mobile 500 – Texas Motor Speedway
Date: Sunday, April 18, 2010
Time: 3:16 PM EST (scheduled Green Flag)
TV: 3:00 PM EST on FOX

Stewart is making his 400th career Cup start this weekend. Meanwhile, it’s rumored that Stewart-Haas Racing may expand to three teams next year to accommodate either Kasey Kahne or Mark Martin, since Kahne announced this week that he’s signed a long-term contract in the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports car starting in 2010.

Safe Bets:

1. Jimmie Johnson (9/2): Johnson has one win at Texas, in the fall of 2007, but he has two straight second-place finishes in the spring race and the third-best average finish overall. It’s hard to root against Johnson anywhere right now, the current Sprint Cup points leader, who’s won three of seven races this season. Johnson finished third in Phoenix last week after leading the most laps. So far in Texas, Johnson was fifth-fastest in practice Friday and qualified on the outside of row 2.

2. Greg Biffle (15/1): Biffle is third in Cup point standings and very hungry for a win. He won this race in 2005 and finished third here last year, one of three straight top-10s at TMS. Greg topped the speed chart in first practice at Texas today and qualified P3.

Dark Horse:

1. Dale Earnhardt Jr. (25/1): Dale Jr. has a soft spot in his heart for the Texas track, the site of his first-ever Cup win back in his 2000 rookie season. Though he’s struggled here the last few years, Earnhardt is off to a pretty good start in 2010 and currently ranks tenth in points. He ran third in Cup practice on Friday and qualified ninth.

Summary: There is a chance of rain throughout the weekend, possibly heavy at times. Goodyear brought entirely new tire codes for both the left and right sides this year, based on a January tire test, and teams are still adjusting to having spoilers back on the car. Carl Edwards swept this track in 2008.

Jeff Gordon won the spring race last year, while Kurt Busch won in the fall.

Edwards and Jeff Burton are the only drivers with more than one Texas win. Matt Kenseth has the best average finish at Texas overall.

Four of the last eight Texas races (both spring and fall dates) have been won from the front row.
