2010 Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 Predictions – Betting Preview + Picks + Odds

Preview: While the NASCAR Nation is still buzzing about last weekend’s dust-up between veteran driver Kevin Harvick and young gun Joey Logano, there are two other stories to keep an eye on as the circuit heads to Michigan this weekend.

Race: Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 – Michigan International Speedway
Date: Sunday, June 13, 2010
Time: 1:16 PM EST (scheduled green flag)
TV: 1:00 PM EST on TNT

The first, unfortunately, is the weather. Although rain held off long enough on Friday to get the full qualifying session in, the weather forecast is calling for a 50% chance of rain and thunderstorms for the weekend.

This could result in Saturday’s Happy Hour being rained out and/or a green track to start the race Sunday.

Another storyline is the possibility of Ford finally breaking into the win column in 2010, as Michigan is considered a Ford-friendly track. Ford teams won 7 of 11 races here between 2002-2007, but have only been to victory lane once in the last five MIS races (Carl Edwards in August 2008).

Still, with Ford winless in 14 Cup races this year, they will take a win any way they can get it.

Eight Ford teams will be running the new FR9 engine this weekend.

Safe Bets:

1. Denny Hamlin (7/2): Hamlin’s got the hot shoe in NASCAR right now, with a series-leading four wins including the victory last week at Pocono. Although he has not won a race at MIS yet, he did finish third in this race last year and has the fifth-best average finish overall.

Hamlin qualified 7th.

. 2. Kurt Busch (6/1): Busch is the polesitter for Sunday’s race and has two wins already in 2010.

Busch finished eighth in this race last year and has won twice at Michigan in 18 starts, once in a Roush Ford and once in a Penske Dodge (August 2007).

Dark Horse:

1. Kasey Kahne (20/1): Kahne won this race in 2006, going from flag to flag for the victory. He has also finished second twice and qualified fourth for Sunday’s race.

Summary: Although he’s had a bit of an uncharacteristic struggle the past few weeks, don’t rule out a strong run by Jimmie Johnson this weekend, who won in February at Auto Club Speedway, sometimes known as Michigan’s sister track.

Johnson qualified third and currently has 9/2 odds.
