2010 Goody’s Fast Pain Relief 500 Predictions – Betting Preview + Picks + Odds

Preview:  Rain, rain go away! Friday’s qualifying session was rained out at Martinsville and, though it is supposed to be sunny Saturday, Sunday’s forecast calls for more rain and a high temperature of just 54°.

Race: Goody’s Fast Pain Relief 500 – Martinsville Speedway
Date: Sunday, March 28, 2010
Time: 1:13 PM EST (scheduled Green Flag)
TV: 1:00 PM EST on FOX

This will present several problems, including practicing and racing under very different track conditions and the possibility of a rain-shortened (but completed) race on Sunday or moving into Monday for completion. Because of the qualifying rain-out, cars will line up by points, putting Kevin Harvick and Matt Kenseth on the front row.

Safe Bets:

1. Jimmie Johnson (9/5): My mantra in the Chase last year was that the presumptive race winner every week was Jimmie Johnson until proven otherwise, and this season seems to be no different. Johnson has won three of the first five races this year and has climbed from 35th in points after Daytona to third after Bristol, just 14 points out of 1st. Johnson has won five of the last seven Martinsville races (both spring and fall dates), has six total wins, and the best average finish at a very low 5.1.

2. Jeff Gordon (9/2): Gordon is the winningest driver at Martinsville with seven wins in 34 starts and ranks second to Johnson in the average finish category. Having led almost 2800 laps at Martinsville in his Cup career, Gordon surely knows his way around the place and he’s got the stats to prove it – he has 10 straight top-5 finishes here and 14 straight top-10s which include four of his seven wins.

Dark Horse:

1. Kurt Busch (20/1): Because of the qualifying rain-out, Busch will start the race seventh on the grid at a venue where track position is vital. Busch won this race in 2002 and also has a win under his belt this season.
Summary: This is the first race since NASCAR replaced the COT wing with a rear spoiler. Although some drivers have said it has not made that big a difference yet, the spoiler will present new challenges to crew chiefs this weekend and at Phoenix in two weeks, where aerodynamics play a more critical role.
