2010 Crown Royal 400 Predictions – Betting Preview + Picks + Odds

Preview: NASCAR has been racing at Richmond International Raceway since 1953, just a few years after the birth of the sport. Many drivers cite this track as among their favorites, though others say it’s a track they can’t seem to get a handle on. While the likelihood of rain is low this weekend, teams will be coping with high heat, as it has been sunny in Richmond this weekend with daytime temps of 90 degrees or higher.

Race: Crown Royal 400 at Talladega Superspeedway
Date: Saturday, May 1, 2010
Time: 7:46 PM EST (scheduled Green Flag)
TV: 7:30 PM EST on FOX

With inclement weather in the forecast for Saturday, the starting grid may end up being set by owner points, putting Jimmie Johnson and Matt Kenseth on the front row, and the race may get underway on a green track, making it even trickier than usual.

Safe Bets:

1. Kyle Busch (4/1): Busch won this race last year, won the Nationwide race Friday, starts on the pole Saturday, and was fastest in Happy Hour. It’s safe to say he knows his way around Richmond. Kyle has the best average finish at Richmond, a very low 6.0, and in ten starts here has eight top-5 finishes.

Along with his win, Busch has finished second at RIR three times.

. Jeff Gordon (6/1): Gordon’s been knocking on the door of victory several times this year and has two prior victories at Richmond. Though he’s not the winningest driver here, he has six straight top-10s and led 96 laps in this race last year before finishing eighth.

Jeff ran in the top 10 in both practices Friday and qualified P4.

Dark Horse:

1. Ryan Newman (20/1): Both Newman and teammate Tony Stewart have won previously at Richmond, but both did so with other teams. Newman has a much better record at Richmond in the spring race than in the fall and led 45 laps before finishing fourth in this race last year.

Ryan qualified fifth and was fifth-fastest in final practice.

Summary: Don’t rule out a strong run by any of the Hendrick teams, but I’m giving the nod to Joe Gibbs Racing this weekend. Denny Hamlin has also been strong here in the recent past, but starts 30th Saturday night and was 41st in final practice.
