2010 Autism Speaks 400 Predictions – Betting Preview + Picks + Odds

Preview: Dover is one of those tracks that NASCAR drivers either love or loathe, without much middle ground. It is a one-mile, high-banked concrete oval where the Cup Series has run since 1969 for a total of 80 races in the books.

Race: Autism Speaks 400 presented by Hershey at Dover Intl. Speedway
Date: Sunday, May 16, 2010
Time: 1:16 PM EST (scheduled green flag)
TV: 1:00 PM EST on FOX

Jimmie Johnson swept the track last year and is the winningest driver overall with five wins, followed by Jeff Gordon and Mark Martin with four wins a piece. Martin Truex and Kasey Kahne will start on the front row.

Safe Bets:

1. Jimmie Johnson (3/1):: As noted above, Johnson has an excellent record at Dover and, although he’s been a little off the past few weeks (two DNFs in the last three races), you can’t keep the No. 48 team down for long. Johnson’s five wins here came in just 16 starts and he has accumulated the most points at Dover over the last three races.

Johnson led Friday’s practice and qualified fifth; he is currently second in Sprint Cup points.

. 2. Kyle Busch (8/1): Busch won this race in 2008, though he struggled here last year, but also has two second-place finishes. He qualified fourth and ran fifth in Friday’s practice session.

Busch is currently third in Cup points behind Kevin Harvick and Johnson and won at Richmond two weeks ago.

Dark Horse:

1. Kasey Kahne (20/1): Kahne qualified on the outside pole at Dover and ran third in practice Friday. Though he hasn’t ever won at Dover, he had two top-ten finishes here last year.

Keep an eye on Happy Hour speeds for a final glance at the team’s performance.

Summary: Jeff Gordon said of Dover: “This place is tough because it’s all corners. High-banked, very fast, long corners. When you’re in the corners that long, the car has got to be right. You’ve got to have a really good feel. Getting the balance right here is difficult because if you get the car too comfortable, the front end doesn’t turn and it pushes and then you lose your speed.

If you get the car turning too good, the back end wants to come around and you lose your speed. To get the balance right here is very challenging … The concrete, also, doesn’t have as much grip as say a paved track.

So it’s just one of those things where you’re on the edge all the time around this track.

The teams that can get the car to work the best on the edge like that are the ones that are going to have a shot at winning.”
