2009 Sour Cream Dips at The Glen Predictions – Betting Preview + Picks + Odds

Race: Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at The Glen – Watkins Glen International Speedway
Date: Sunday, August 9, 2009
Time: 2:18 PM EST (scheduled green flag)
TV: 2:00 PM EST on ESPN

Preview: Watkins Glen is the second of two road course races on the Sprint Cup circuit; the first was California’s Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, won by Kasey Kahne in June. But NASCAR’s Matt Kenseth notes that although both races involve road courses, the similarities pretty much end there: “Watkins Glen is quite a bit different than Sonoma and, of the two, I like racing at Watkins Glen better. It drives a lot more like a speedway – like a Michigan or something. You don’t have the big elevation changes that you do at Sonoma, which makes it a little easier.

At Watkins Glen, it is more about momentum and going fast. The key is to qualify well and work out a good pit strategy. If you do that, you can hopefully come out of there with a solid finish.” Qualifying is scheduled for Friday morning.

Safe Bets:

1. Tony Stewart (+450): Stewart and Jeff Gordon are tied for the most wins at the Glen with four a piece, but Stewart has the best average finish among drivers with more than one start. The current points leader has won three of the last five races here and finished second in the other two.

2. Marcos Ambrose (+650): The former two-time V8 supercar champ has shown his ability to take care of his car in his first full-time Sprint Cup series – a quality that serves him well on road courses. He finished third last season in his only Cup start at WGI and won the Nationwide race here last year.

Dark Horse:

1. Kevin Harvick (+2200): Harvick won this race in 2006 and finished sixth last year. In eight starts, he’s had only one finish outside the top 15 and in his last five Watkins Glen races, Harvick ranks third in points accumulated to Tony Stewart and Robby Gordon.

Summary: As Kenseth notes, track position is critical here with seven of the last eight race winners coming from a top 10 starting spot. Other drivers to watch include Jimmie Johnson, last year’s winner Kyle Busch, and Pocono winner Denny Hamlin.
