2009 Food City 500 Betting Preview + Picks + Odds

Race: Food City 500 – Bristol Motor Speedway
Date: Sunday, March 22, 2009
Time: 2:16 PM EST (scheduled Green Flag)
TV: 1:30 PM EST on FOX

Preview: “Welcome to the Holy Grail of Motorsports.” That’s the greeting on the Bristol Motor Speedway website. NASCAR has been visiting this eastern Tennessee short track since the early 1960s. Fans used to enjoy the beatin’ and bangin’ that Bristol was known for, but since a repaving project in 2007, the track has developed a second groove that suits drivers, if not so much the fans.Although passing is easier here than it used to be, it still easy to get a lap down early, making qualifying up front a bigger priority than it would be at a bigger track.

Safe Bets:

1. Kyle Busch (+600): Busch is the oddsmakers’ favorite so far this week, having won this race in 2007 and finishing twice in the summer night race. Busch already has a win under his belt this year and has the highest points total among drivers over the last five Bristol races (both spring and summer dates). One caveat: Toyota has never been to Victory Lane at Bristol in the Cup Series.

2. Jeff Gordon (+650): Gordon is the hottest driver in the circuit and leads the Cup Series points standings. Although he’s yet to win a race this season (or last), he has two second-place finishes in four races and is tied with Kurt Busch for most wins among active drivers at Bristol with five. Gordon also qualifies very well here – one of the keys to winning.

Dark Horse:

1. Dale Earnhardt Jr. (+1800): Junior desperately needs to get his ’09 season back on track and Bristol would be a good place to start. He ranks fourth in the average finish category and finished fifth in this race last year.

Summary: Hopefully, Sunday’s Cup race will not be overshadowed by the mounting enthusiasm for Saturday night’s ‘seniors’ competition, featuring NASCAR legends like Harry Gant, Cale Yarborough and Junior Johnson. That event seems to be more buzzworthy than the Cup race itself among fans.
