New York gained the early edge on Monday night with a 3-2 victory as a 181 road favorite behind another strong effort by C.C. Sabathia. The win pushed its record to 65-42 to draw within one game of Boston in the AL East. The Yankees are 37-22 at home this year and 28-20 on the road heading into Tuesday night’s Game 2.
This team remained extremely quite around the recent trade deadline, as New York seems content to make the run at the AL Pennant with its current roster of stars. So far its seems to be enough with a pitching staff that is tied for second in the AL with a team ERA of 3.45 and a lineup that is ranked second in scoring with 563 runs.
A.J. Burnett is slated to get the start on Thursday for New York. This has not been one of his better years with an 8-9 record overall and an ERA of 4.23. He is just 2-6 in his last 10 starts with a 4.66 ERA. Lifetime against the White Sox, Burnett is 2-5 with an ERA of 4.84.
Monday’s setback was Chicago’s third in-a-row after winning five of its previous six games. The White Sox are now 52-55 on the year and 4.5 games in back of Detroit in the AL Central. It will be Gavin Floyd’s turn in the rotation for the White Sox. He is 9-9 on the year with a 3.96 ERA, but has been white-hot in his last three starts. In consecutive wins over the Indians, Tigers, and Red Sox, Floyd has given up just two earned runs in 22.1 innings. He is 2-1 against the Yankees with an ERA of 3.99.
Head-to-head this season, the Yankees have won three of five heading into Tuesday’s game. The total has stayed ‘under’ in four of the five games.
Bank on Floyd’s dominance to continue for at least one more start as he shuts the Yankees’ lineup down to lead Chicago to a win.
