New York’s bats were held in check on Monday night in Game 1 of this series despite the return of Derek Jeter to the lineup. The Yankees fell 6-3 as a 121 road favorite and the total ended as a ‘push’ against a closing line of nine. They are still a game and a half ahead of Boston in the AL East with an overall record of 50-33 and are 28-18 at home and 22-15 on the road.

Jeter’s return should be a welcomed boost to a lineup that is ranked sixth in the American League in hitting with a .258 team batting average. Scoring has not been an issue though, as the Yankees are ranked second in the AL with 436 total runs.

Phil Hughes is expected to get the start on Wednesday for New York. He will be making his first start since April 14 after going on the DL with inflammation in his throwing shoulder. Hughes is 2-0 against the Indians in his career with a 3.50 ERA. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Cleveland won its last two interleague series against Arizona and Cincinnati to raise its overall record to 45-38. Monday’s win increased the Indians lead over Detroit in the AL Central to a game and a half. They are 20-24 on the road this season, but a solid 25-14 at home.

The pitching staff’s 3.80 ERA is ranked seventh in the AL and the lineup is ranked 10th in hitting with a team batting average of .249, but Cleveland continues to find ways to win. Asdrubal Cabrera has had a huge hand in the Indians’ success this season with a team-high 49 RBI and 14 home runs.

It is Justin Masterson’s turn in the rotation for Cleveland. He is 6-6 this season with a 2.85 ERA in 17 starts. He snapped a six-game losing streak this past Friday night by holding the Reds to one run on four hits in a full eight innings of work. Lifetime against New York he is 1-2 with an ERA of 3.80.

Head-to-head, the Yankees have won three of five going into Tuesday’s game. The total is 1-2-2 over the five games. This time around, stick with New York as a well-rested Hughes looks sharp in his return.
