MLB Weekend Series: Yankees vs Red Sox odds

Finally, the best rivalry in baseball betting, if not all of sports betting, is back. The Yankees vs Red Sox odds return Friday night as the demons of the AL East go head to head for a three-game set at Fenway park. Let’s make some hot sportsbook picks for the entire series.

Friday, April 24, 7:10 p.m. ET: Joba Chamberlain (0-0, 5.06) vs Jon Lester (1-2, 5.50)

Two of the most talent young pitchers in baseball betting, neither of whom has found his game so far this season, clash Friday when Joba Chamberlain matches up against Jon Lester to open the Yankees vs Red Sox line. 2009 hasn’t started well for Joba, as he’s been knocked around by the Indians and Royals while struggling with his control a bit. Could the Red Sox be the remedy he needs, though? Even though Boston’s lineup is obviously potent, Joba is 2-0 at Fenway with a 3.00 ERA and 12 strikeouts in nine innings, so he seems to relish the pressure.

Lester, though, is just as good against the Yankees in MLB betting (2-0, 3.42) and is an amazing 17-3 at Fenway in 32 career starts. Coming off a dominant outing against Baltimore last week, Lester seems closer to reaching midseason form, so he should cool off the Yankee bats and outduel Joba.

Online betting pick: Red Sox

Saturday, April 25, 4:10 p.m. ET: A.J. Burnett (2-0, 3.20) vs Josh Beckett (2-1, 3.79)

Now we’re really talkin’. This exciting MLB betting series really gets going with an ace-on-ace matchup Saturday afternoon. All the A.J. Burnett haters likely want to see him fall on his face here, but don’t count on it. Not only is he 5-0 against the BoSox in his career, check out these numbers: .200, .222, .227. Those are the career batting averages of Kevin Youkilis, Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz against him.

MLB betting fans immediately think of Josh Beckett’s complete-game shutout of the Yankees in the 2003 World Series odds whenever he faces the Bronx Bombers, but the truth is that he has a 5.33 career ERA against the Yanks. Jorge Posada, Robinson Cano and the red-hot Derek Jeter all have great career track records against Beckett, so you should bet at the sportsbook for them to get to him on Saturday.

Online betting pick: Yankees

Sunday, April 26, 8:05 p.m. ET: Andy Pettitte (2-0, 2.53) vs Justin Masterson (1-0, 3.18)

On paper, you have to like this MLB betting matchup for the Yankees, as Pettitte certainly isn’t afraid of the BoSox (16-8 lifetime against them), and Masterson isn’t a household sportsbook name yet. However, it’s hard to ignore the fact that (a) Masterson hasn’t yet lost at Fenway Park, going 6-0 in his career there and (b) No current Yankee hitter has been very successful against Masterson; in fact, none of them has a homer off him.

Play the numbers and stick with Masterson and the Red Sox at the sportsbook until they prove you wrong.

Online betting pick: Red Sox

The Yankees getting swept in this series is not what the Steinbrenners envisioned when shelling out all that coin in the off season for a “can’t miss” team of all stars.
