Conventional logic would have you believe it’s never too early to wager on 2010 World Series futures. After all, you could find some real value right now. However, bettors should consider the current futures breakdown as the “Pre-Bay-Holliday odds.” Jason Bay and Matt Holliday’s final destinations could significantly impact their new teams’ chances of reaching the Fall Classic.

Here’s a preliminary look at the top favorites and a couple of sleepers – with Bay and Holliday’s possible suitors taken into consideration.

FAVORITES

New York Yankees
No surprise whatsoever here. Already the reigning World Series champs, the Yanks have improved even more this offseason. They added Curtis Granderson in a deal with the Tigers. Not only is Granderson a toolsy, powerful hitter entering his prime, he’s also a major defensive upgrade in center field. Nick Johnson returns to the Big Apple to DH and Javier Vazquez gets another shot at success in the Bronx after a career year in Atlanta. The Yankees are downright scary and you never know when they’ll pull another massive signing or trade out of their hats. No matter what Brian Cashman says, we can’t count the Bronx Bombers out of the Bay/Holliday sweepstakes.

Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies are another slam-dunk favorite. Their explosive offense remains intact with Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth and Raul Ibanez all still under contract. Now Roy Halladay joins the mix and gets a chance to show the mainstream baseball universe that he’s quite possibly baseball’s best pitcher. The scariest part is that the Phillies didn’t surrender any current regulars to the Blue Jays to get Doc. He’ll take Cliff Lee’s spot and join Happ, Hamels and Blanton in the National League’s deepest rotation.

Boston Red Sox
You knew Theo Epstein couldn’t stand pat this offseason after the Red Sox watched their bitter rival Yankees win the big one. Adding John Lackey to a rotation that already had Josh Beckett, Jon Lester, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Clay Buchholz makes you wonder if the BoSox have surpassed the Yanks in pitching depth. Mike Cameron and Marco Scutaro aren’t marquee acquisitions but they aren’t easy outs and they probably give Boston the American League’s best defense now.

SLEEPERS

St. Louis Cardinals
The Cards don’t feel like true sleepers but they’re clearly not in the same league as the three teams above. They do, however, boast the decade’s best hitter in Albert Pujols and, arguably, baseball’s best one-two pitching punch in Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright. If they can re-sign Holliday, they’ll contend.

Seattle Mariners
Here’s the deep sleeper of the bunch. It’s been a while since Seattle was relevant but that could very well change this season. The Mariners clearly want to win now, as they acquired Cliff Lee to pair with Felix Hernandez in a suddenly dynamite top of the rotation. The offense needs a bit of work but the Chone Figgins and Milton Bradley deals were plus-moves. The X-factor is Jason Bay. He grew up in nearby British Columbia and there’s still an outside chance he’d take a “hometown” discount to play for Seattle. If the Mariners are willing to surrender some defensive effectiveness, they could still make a move for Bay.

The best teams in league seem to be just getting better making it very difficult for the rest of the league to try and catch them. Atlanta and Florida could be tough in the Natinal League East East but not enough to unseat the Phillies and New York and Boston will pace the American League East.
