Nationals vs Giants Baseball Picks

The Nationals have been playing some good ball going 7-3 in their last 10. That has pulled them even with Atlanta for first place in the NL East as they continue their road trip against the best in the Majors Giants.

Washington

They have a chance to get things going with a big advantage on the mound in the opener and while they have been winning their offense has been coming alive to go with the second best ERA in the Majors.

Lately shortstop Ian Desmond has been swinging a hot stick, he leads the Nats in homers with 13.

Stephen Strasburg is probably never going to live up to the hype. This season he has been very good and is striking out a lot of batters but he still needs to work on economizing so he can dominate past the 7th inning every once in a while.

His road splits are not encouraging with an ERA over 4 and a 0-3 record. They need him to step up in this one and make a statement against the first place Giants.

San Francisco

San Francisco swept the Mets over the weekend and have won 5 in a row.

They are defying my assumptions about this team as they continue to be the best team in baseball. The pitching they have received to this point is sustainable but I do not think will be a top ten offensive club.

So far players like Mike Morse have picked up the slack for the likes of Buster Posey and Pablo Sandoval. I think things may normalize but the law of averages tells us that a slump bound to affect this club at some time or another.

Ryan Vogelsong was not sharp early in the year but he has been much better. In 7 of his last 10 starts he has given up 2ER or fewer and if you take away one terrible outing at Coors Field his overall numbers would look even better. At home he has been especially sharp with a an ERA of 2.15.

The key has been keeping the ball in the park, all of the home runs he has allowed this season have been on the road.

The way that San Francisco is playing right now it would take a command performance to beat them. Strasburg can provide just that and the Nats can back him up nicely against Vogelsong.

Whenever I see a total below 7 I always look to the over.

I know that might be old school thinking but I just can’t get behind totals that low.

Total prediction:  Over
Score prediction:  Washington 5 – San Francisco 3
