The Nationals fashion themsleves an elite team but after losing the series opener to the Mets are closer to the middle than the top of the National League East. They opened the series with Stephen Strasburg on the hill but the Mets weren’t shy in welcoming him to the Big Apple.

While the team has been struggling of late it has been the offense that has disappeared.
They have only scored more than 4 runs once in their last 7 games.

Washington is fortunate to have two aces in Strasburg and Saturday starter Gio Gonzalez. The lefty was hammered in his last start but has had good success against New York since coming to the National League last season. Gonzalez is the only reason to get behind Washington on Saturday.
The value is decent at -150 given that the Mets starter has little going for him.
I am a litte worried about backing a team that has really struggled to score lately. Their one explosion was against the Marlins.
New York
The Mets are one of the more pleasant surprises in April. Part of it has been scheduling but they also just beat the Nats in the series opener, a team they are going to have to have success against if they want to challenge for anything this season. The Mets have amazingly already had three games postponed already this season. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]
The shortening of their series against Colorado was probably to their advantage the way the Rockies are playing.
There is no way to sugarcoat what we have been seeing from Mets starter Jeremy Hefner…he has been terrible with an E.R.A. over 7 through three outings including 2 starts. The Mets have some young pitching talent in their system but Hefner is not considered to be part of that group – there is a reason he is 27 with not much experience behind him.
The lone advantage he might have is the Nats have not seem him before in his young career.
I am looking for Washington to get back to winning Saturday and even the series. I am not big on doing this but why not make a play on the Nats to win the series. Gonzalez is a nice value on this one Saturday and follow that up with red hot Jordan Zimmerman to close out the series on Sunday.
You will probably get a decent payoff too.
