As a result this is a battle between two first place teams. Despite having the second best ERA in the Majors the Nats have only won 4 of their last 10 – including 2 against Houston.
This team is sputtering thanks to an offense that hass been inconsistent all season. There is some hope because they have been treading water with Bryce Harper on the DL but they are going to have to wait until July until he will be back in the lineup.

Until then they are going to have to continue to rely on their pitching.

It has been very good overall but Gio Gonzalez has been the weak link on a top starting staff. The lefty’s splits are kind of where you expect them to be so you have to wonder if he has been a little unlucky to this point.
If that is the case than Washington has a chance to get even better or ride out some bumps of others once his luck turns.
Milwaukee
The Brewers continue to be one of the most pleasant surprises in baseball.
They are tied for the most wins in the Majors with Oakland and have the biggest lead of any division leader right now. They just completed a sweep in Colorado, have won 6 of their last 7 and will continue to be a threat as long as they continue to pitch.
The Brew Crew have a powerful lineup with 5 players already in double figures in homers. Carlos Gomez may be a bit of a nutjob but right now he might be the leading MVP candidate in the NL.
Milwaukee made a shrewd acquisition when they signed Matt Garza in the offseason. As a former Cub he is familiar with division foes and I think he gives them a bit of an edge. So far his performance has been nothing special, in fact he has the fewest wins of anyone in the rotation right now.
His numbers have been night and day, home and away and this is the kind of situation he has excelled in.
I really like this spot for Milwaukee. Washington is not a great road team and Gonzalez has yet to find his stride this season. Garza has been inconsistent but is very effective at home and the Brewers are playing really well right now.
Gonzalez’ brand is still strong which is why there is decent value on the Brew Crew Monday.
