The Mariners will trot out ace Felix Hernandez for this start. He’s been masterful of late, including a dominant start in his most recent outing, a 4-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves.

In that start, Hernandez limited the Braves to one run on four hits over eight innings of work, striking out eight and walking one while pushing his ERA for the season below two. The win was his 12th of the year, two back of Wily Peralta’s league-leading total.

Hernandez will be making his first start against the Blue Jays this season, but he did make a pair of starts against them a year ago. In the first outing, Hernandez went to the Rogers Centre and shut down the Jays, allowing five hits in eight shutout innings, striking out seven without a walk, needing only 95 pitches to get the job done.

His next start wasn’t nearly as pretty. Hernandez surrendered six runs on nine hits over five innings of work, striking out three and walking just as many.

The Blue Jays counter with Drew Hutchison. Hutchison has been hit or miss this season, but when he’s been good, he’s been very good. On Monday he’ll oppose a Mariner lineup that ranks last in baseball when facing right-handers in their home venue.

His last outing was one of the good ones. In it, Hutchison allowed one run on one hit (a solo home run) over 8 2/3 innings of work against the Orioles, striking out eight and walking one batter while earning his eighth victory of the season.

Fading Hernandez isn’t necessarily the greatest idea, but there is just too much line value on a Blue Jays team riding a wave of momentum into Seattle. Hutchison can hold his own when he’s on, and the Jays’ bats have done a good job of providing runs when needed lately.

Additionally, runs should be at a premium in this contest, with a pair of pitchers set to face off who are both capable of shutting down an opposing lineup. The venue also helps in that area, as Safeco Field is a notorious pitcher’s park.

The Blue Jays are 8-1 in Hutchison’s last nine starts in the opening game of a series, and they are 7-3 in his last 10 road starts.

The under is 9-1-1 in Hernandez’s last 11 starts overall, and it is 12-3 in Hutchison’s last 15 starts against opponents with a winning record.

The play: Toronto +185, Under 6.5
