MLB Matchup Stats | MLB ATS Insider Preview

The Blue Jays will send out staff ace R.A. Dickey in the opener of this series in a matchup we saw just last week. The Blue Jays claimed a 6-4 victory in that contest at the Rogers Centre, with Dickey earning his eighth victory of the season.

Dickey didn’t exactly have his best stuff, though, allowing four earned runs on nine hits over six innings of work. On the other side, Buchholz surrendered five runs, four of them earned, on six hits in six innings of work, though he walked four and struck out only one batter.

Toronto won three games in that four-game set. They had big problems slowing David Ortiz, who homered four times in the series, including a three-run home run in the first inning off Dickey. Ortiz has five home runs in his last seven games, and is 5-for-15 against Dickey this season.

The Red Sox are expected to re-insert Xander Bogaerts into the lineup for this contest after he was given some time off to figure things out. He is 4-for-6 against Dickey with a pair of doubles. Dickey has made one start at Fenway Park in his career, in which he allowed five runs in a complete game loss.

The Red Sox counter with Clay Buchholz. He’s faced the Blue Jays three times this season, going 1-2 with a 5.60 ERA. In seven starts at Fenway this season, Buchholz has a 6.32 ERA, and has given up 52 hits in 37 innings of work.

The Blue Jays offer good value in this one. While they get the game on the road, Dickey has had success against the Red Sox this season, posting a 2-0 record with a 3.65 ERA against them. The Blue Jays have also been victorious in each of their last five games in which they’ve faced Buchholz at Fenway.

With that said, the over looks like the play here. Both teams are swinging the bats well and bring some hot hitters into this contest, and they also have the luxury of getting a quick look at these pitchers, who will be making their second consecutive starts against these same opponents.

The over is 6-0-1 in the last seven meetings between these teams, and it is 4-0 in the last four series-opening games for the Red Sox.

The over is also 6-0-2 in the Blue Jays’ last eight games overall, and it is 6-2 in Buchholz’s last eight starts overall.

The play: Toronto +123, Over 8.5
