Tampa has been pretty terrible this season. It has been no sharply against type that it is difficult to believe but it is true. That being said they are going to influence the race and just took 3 of 4 at Baltimore over the weekend.

Their next stop is Yankee Stadium where they can put a damper on their chances as well. If they could just get healthy they could maybe get back in the race. Right now they are missing two regulars from the lineup and two starters from the rotation. As good as they are/were thats a lot to overcome.

Chris Archer has been pretty sharp over his last 8 starts. He isn’t always pitching deep into the game but in 4 of those games he has not given up an ER and in 2 others just one so he is giving the Rays a great chance to win most times out.
His walk rate is up this season but his homer rate is way down. As long as he is keeping the ball in the park a few extra base runners per game are not going to be too costly.

The Yankees lost their final two game of their series against Boston and now sit an astounding two games below .500 at home for the season – just one reason they are struggling so much. However, they are tied with Toronto and Baltimore with 39 losses as they welcome the AL East’s poorest team.
New York is just 3-4 against Tampa this season but if they are going to be contenders they need to take advantage of the opportunity.
The division is far from a juggernaut this season.
I feel like every time I get assigned the Yankees it is David Phelps on the mound. Phelps got hammered up in Toronto his last time, not a totally uncommon experience for the righty who should probably be in the bullpen.
The one reason he might be holding on to his spot longer than he should is that he has been very sharp at home, which is a tough spot for righthanders. The Tampa lineup is hardly fantastic and both of his outing against them this year came in relief.
Fading the Yanks has been a pretty good strategy but backing the Rays hasn’t…so what do you do. Like so many other games this season you have to go with the stronger starting pitcher and that is undoubtedly Tampa with Chris Archer.
The over is a good bet too as both lineups will load up with whatever lefty power they can find.
