MLB Betting – Shields, Peavy square off in the Windy City

Put down those Stanley Cup odds for a minute and check out this intriguing matchup on the baseball diamond on Thursday, as the red-hot Tampa Bay Rays will head to Chicago to face the struggling White Sox, who are looking for a return from a player that they gave up a lot to get last year.

Rays vs White Sox odds – Thursday, April 22, 8:10 PM ET

James Shields (1-0. 4.50) earned his first win of the year, and his first career win at Fenway Park, with a 6-5 victory at Boston, allowing four runs on nine hits over 6.2 innings, striking out seven and walking one.

He gave up a pair of homers, which makes five in 18 innings of work, and he also threw 121 pitches without making it out of the sixth inning, but still, a win is a win.

The 28-year-old righthander is 1-1 in five career starts against the White Sox with a 4.50 ERA, and he has yet to earn a decision at “The Cell” (Cellular Field), posting a 3.95 ERA.

Jake Peavy (0-0, 6.00) is still looking for his first decision of the 2010 campaign after a 3-2 loss at Cleveland, but at least he bounced back from a rough outing in Toronto. Peavy lasted 7.1 innings against the Indians, throwing 109 pitches, giving up a pair of runs on four hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Peavy, the 2007 Cy Young winner in the National League, is working on getting back to his best after an injury-plagued 2009, and he hasn’t faced the Rays since 2007 while still in San Diego.

Peavy tossed a two-hitter over seven scoreless innings with eight strikeouts and three walks in a 9-0 shutout in Tampa. NBA odds have LeBron James as the favorite to win another MVP; Peavy is just looking to get close to his Cy Young-winning form.

Chicago fans may be more interested in Predators vs Blackhawks odds on Thursday, but they should get behind their White Sox, who should be the favorites in this MLB betting contest.

The White Sox handed the Rays their first road loss of the season on Tuesday in a 4-1 win, and they got a great performance from John Danks.

They’ll need a similar effort from Peavy, who is out to show he can be the ace that the White Sox wanted when they got him last year.

Shields has been having problems keeping the ball in the park, and the White Sox are second in the American League in homers, so that could be something to watch. The Rays got off to a great start away from home, but they’ll get knocked down a peg in Chicago.
