Neither side has been playing especially great of late, but every game is of vital importance in an ultra-competitive American League East division which doesn’t have much room between the teams at the top and bottom of the standings.

The Red Sox get this game after a day off and will send out John Lackey.

After really struggling in his first three years with the franchise, throwing well below what’s become expected of him in his first two years with the team, then losing a year to Tommy John surgery, Lackey really re-found himself in 2013, thanks largely to his improved play in his home ballpark.

Lackey went 6-3 with a 2.47 ERA at Fenway Park a year ago, surrendering nearly half as many earned runs at home as he did on the road. In his last 16 starts there, he’s gone 8-4 with a 2.59 ERA.

In two road starts against Tampa Bay last season, the Rays were really a thorn in his side, as he posted an 8.10 ERA while allowing the team to hit .388 against them. He did draw the Rays in a home start in the playoffs, surrendering four runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out six in 5 1/3 innings of work in a 7-4 Red Sox win.

The Rays counter with Erik Bedard, who doesn’t seem to deserve a spot in a major league rotation at the moment, but injuries have forced the Rays’ hand. Bedard hasn’t gotten past the fourth inning in either of his starts this year.

His last outing was especially troubling, as he walked five Twins hitters in just four innings of work.

On the year, Bedard has posted a 7.45 ERA with a 2.07 WHIP, while allowing opposing hitters to post a .310 batting average against him.

He made one start against the Red Sox a year ago, and it came at Fenway. He lasted only three innings in that one, giving up five runs on eight hits, surrendering five home runs.

Runs shouldn’t be too hard to come by in this contest, though another gem from Lackey isn’t out of the question after he dominated the Yankees his last time out.

The Red Sox should be able to out-mash a Rays team that has struggled to score runs at times this season.

The Red Sox are 9-3 in Lackey’s last 12 home starts, and 5-2 in the last seven meetings between these teams.

The over is 4-1 in the Red Sox last five home games, and 11-5-1 in the Rays’ last 17 games against A.L. East opponents.

The play: Parlay – Boston -160, Over 9
