New York Yankees (4-3 through April 8)
C.C. Sabathia (0-0. 1.38)

The monkey is finally off Boston’s back after the Red Sox bet the Yankees Friday afternoon for their first victory of 2011. But C.C. Sabathia will make life tough on them in the Sunday nighter.

The big lefty has faced the Red Sox 15 times in his career, going 6-5 with a 3.45 ERA. Often a slow starter, C.C. has broken the trend over his first two outings this season, allowing a combined two runs. While Sabathia is really tough on Boston’s lefty hitters, like Adrian Gonzalez (.125 hitter against Sabathia), Jacoby Ellsbury (.077) and Carl Crawford (13 strikeouts in 54 at-bats), he’s not invincible against every guy on the team.

If anyone has C.C.’s number, it’s righty Kevin Youkilis. Youk bats .409 with a homer in 22 career at-bats against Sabathia. So he could be the key to keeping Boston afloat on Sunday.

Boston Red Sox (1-6 through April 8)
Josh Beckett (0-1, 5.40)

Even if Friday’s win finally brought some optimism for the Red Sox, they and their fans have to be sweating with Josh Beckett taking the mound Sunday night against the Bronx Bombers. Even if you think Beckett was unlucky last year on his BABIP, or if you thought he threw reasonably well against Cleveland on Tuesday, even Beckett at his best has struggled mightily versus the Yankees in his career (save for his legendary shutout in the 2003 World Series when he was a Marlin).

Forget Pedro Martinez; the Yankees are Beckett’s daddy just as much. Though he’s  somehow 10-7 against them, he has a 6.26 ERA with 24 homers allowed in 132.1 innings.

MLB Trends:

Over is 7-2-1 in NYY last 10 road games.
Over is 18-7-1 in NYY last 26 overall.
Over is 18-7-1 in NYY last 26 on grass.
Over is 8-3 in BOS last 11 overall.
Over is 8-3 in BOS last 11 on grass.
Under is 41-20-3 in BOS last 64 Sun. games.
NYY are 2-6 in the last 8 meetings.
Over is 38-15-1 in the last 54 meetings in Boston.

The pick:

Whereas Youkilis is just about the only current Boston player with a successful history against Sabathia, it seems that every Yankee joins the party against Beckett. Alex Rodriguez has three homers and 11 RBI over 56 at-bats against him; Robinson Cano mashes Beckett to the tune of three homers, 12 RBI and a .339 average over 56 at-bats. New York just has more ways to win in this matchup. The Yanks are the right play.

Yankees vs Red Sox prediction: Yankees 8, Red Sox 4
