Wainwright Tries To Extend Hot Streak North Of The Border

MLB Betting – St. Louis Cardinals @ Toronto Blue Jays

Adam Wainwright (10-4) vs. Brandon Morrow (4-5)

Wainwright vs. Blue Jays Hitting

This season Adam Wainwright has picked up right where he left off from last year’s Cy Young-caliber campaign. Wainwright is 10-4 with a 2.23 ERA so far this year; coupled with Chris Carpenter, he gives the Cardinals one of the most dangerous 1-2 punches in the Major Leagues. His last start was one of his best performances of the season; he threw eight innings, allowing five hits, zero runs and striking out four. If it weren’t for Ubaldo Jimenez, Wainwright would be atop most polls for NL Cy Young.

Wainwright has never faced the Blue Jays in his career. This year’s version of the Blue Jays is a much more power-oriented team than in years past, as Toronto leads the Major Leagues in home runs. Five batters have double-digit home run totals, including Jose Bautista, who leads the team and the majors with 20 long balls. However, if you frequently bet on MLB, you know the Jays aren’t that adept at hitting the otherwise, as they rank near the bottom of the league in team batting average and OBP. If Wainwright can keep the ball in the park, it should lead to a victory.

Morrow vs. Cardinals Hitting

Despite a 1-1 record in his last four starts, Brandon Morrow is pitching the best he has all season. He hasn’t allowed more than two runs in a game in those four outings, and has gone at least six innings in each as well. His high ERA (4.97) and walk rate (41 in 76 IP) are more of an indication of his slow start than a fair reflection of how he has been as of late. He has incredible talent; he just has to learn how to control it.

A newbie against the Cardinals, Morrow is facing a very talented lineup. Even if you’re not into the whole sports bet thing, you know the offensive leader for St. Louis Albert Pujols. This season is no exception, as he leads his team in batting average, home runs, and RBI’s. He’s completely over his slump that plagued him earlier in the season. Guys like Matt Holliday, Ryan Ludwick and Colby Rasmus have all been swinging a hot bat and could cause Morrow to head to the showers early if they hit aggressively at the beginning of the game.

Bullpen Comparison

The Jays bullpen isn’t dominant by any means, but they do seem to get the job done. Closer Kevin Gregg has notched 18 saves this year, despite owning a 4.03 ERA. Guys like Jason Frasor and Scott Downs have pitched well at times, but their relatively high ERA’s suggest they have had their bad days. The ace of the bullpen is Shawn Camp. Camp has a team-low 2.48 ERA in 36 innings pitched.

Unlike Toronto, the Cardinals have a few relievers that have been superb all season. Out of the seven regular relievers who have pitched more than 22 innings, four have an ERA of 3.00 or lower. Closer Ryan Franklin is one of them, and has added 13 saves as well. Jason Motte and Kyle McClennan have been spectacular when called upon.

Outlook

The Toronto Blue Jays can hit home runs, but that’s about it for them offensively. They aren’t a very good hitting team outside of power, and that’s going to haunt them for the entire season. Morrow can be very good some nights, and is on a hot streak, but the Cardinals are the kind of team that can snap hot streaks. Wainwright is a fantastic pitcher who doesn’t let up many home runs and can neutralize any offense. The Jays are overmatched in this contest; if you’re betting, count on Wainwright throwing another gem.

Gambling Trends:

Toronto is 15-8 SU in its last 23 games at home
Toronto is 5-10 SU in its last 15 games
Toronto is 2-4 SU in its last 6 games at home
Toronto is 2-6 SU in its last 8 games when playing St. Louis
St. Louis is 4-1 SU in its last 5 games
St. Louis is 6-2 SU in its last 8 games when playing Toronto

Pick: St. Louis Cardinals
