The St. Louis Cardinals came into Friday night with the best record in baseball. As this is being written they were beating L.A 3-0 and looking to extend their lead in the National League Central. You have to hand it to St. Louis for always being so competitive.

St. Louis

When you look at their roster you are not intimidated but they just have so many guys who do their jobs and produce.

The pitching has been especially good too, leading the Majors in ERA at 3.16.

Shelby Miller is proving to be as good as advertised now that he is in the rotation

Cardinals starter John Gast is making just his third major league start Saturday afternoon He is a perfect 2-0 even though his peripherals have been just mediocre. Gast doesn’ have the ceiling of some of the other young Cardinals starters but hasn’t looked out of place with the big club either.

One encouraging sign is that he was better in his second start than his first. Another is that he is facing a Dodgers team that is kind of a mess right now. That might be an understatement

Los Angeles

The Los Angeles Dodgers are making headlines for all the wrong reasons lately. Manager

Don Mattingly is calling out members of his own team for not putting forth great efforts and benching players like right fielder Andre Ethier in turn. L.A. is in last place in the National League West (below even the San Diego Padres) and it would be surprising to see them suddenly come to life against the Majors best. The just might have further room to plunge.

L.A. got starter Zach Greinke back from injury but with Josh Beckett still on the shelf there is still a spot for Ted Lilly even through the veteran lefthander hasn’t earned it. Lilly is normally pretty reliable but his numbers are not good this seaosn.

He does like pitching against St. Louis though with a career 7-3 record and very good ERA, which I assume was mostly accumulated when he was pitching with the Cubs.

The way the Dodgers are going right now it is hard to bet them unless ace Clayton Kershaw is on the mound.

You may want to pass on the MLB leading Cards because you just don’t have a book on John Gast yet but don’t flip it and get behind the Dodgers. Maybe hope that some others do to bring the value on STL up .

I was surprised to see this one as a pick’em. Its a llittle too much respect for Lilly or disrespect the Cards, a team that never really gets its due nationally.

O/U Pick: Over Score
Prediction: St. Louis 6 – Los Angeles 3
