Adam Wainwright (1-0) notched his 100th career win, striking out nine batters and allowing just three singles, while pitching seven scoreless innings to help the Cardinals begin to defend their 2013 National League Central crown.

The bullpen helped out too, as Carlos Martinez and Trevor Rosenthal tossed a perfect eighth and ninth.

Meanwhile, Reds starter Johnny Cueto (0-1) was equally as good, except for Molina’s blast, which was one of just three hits he surrendered.

Offensively, Cincinnati’s lineup was blanked for much of the contest except for Todd Frazier who had two of his team’s three hits.

It was the first time since Cincinnati was held scoreless Opening Day since 1953, finishing 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

After being off Tuesday, the best of three-game series will resume on Wednesday, with the Reds sending left hander Tony Cingrani to the mound.

The 24-year-old went 3-1 in the spring with a 4.81 ERA.  He is 2-0 lifetime against the Cardinals in as many starts, with a  4.35 ERA.

St. Louis will counter with righty Michael Wacha who was thrust from the bullpen into the role of a starter late last season.

The 22-year-old gave up just a single home run in his final 38 innings of the regular season before going 4-1 with a 2.64 ERA in five postseason starts.

Wacha was 3-0 with a 1.77 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 20 1/3 innings this spring and has played two games against the Reds lifetime, fanning 10 of 38 batters over 10 innings of work.

Matt’s Free Prediction:

St. Louis- Although young, Wacha has proven himself and has fared well against the Reds.

Meanwhile, power hitting outfielder Jay Bruce is 0-for-5 with three strikeouts vs. Wacha.

I think the Cincy offense will again struggle as the Cardinals roll to their second win of the series.
