Seattle (0-0) is hoping that the 2014 season will be better than its 71-91 finish a year ago, and part of their optimism will come from its offseason signing of free agent second baseman Robinson Cano, new manager Lloyd McClendon and a new closer in Fernando Rodney.

Acquired from the New York Yankees for a whopping 10-year, $240 million contract, Seattle has put a lot of coin on Cano to lead a Mariners’ lackluster offensive attack that has kept them out of the playoffs since 2001.

Meanwhile, the Halos spent most their bankroll on 22-year-old slugging outfield Mike Trout, who agreed to a six-year deal worth $144.5 million after placing second in the American League MVP balloting in each of his first two full seasons.

But the LA (0-0)didn’t just stop there, they pulled out what was left to buy third baseman David Freese, and are hoping he along with Trout, first baseman Albert Pujols and outfielder Josh Hamilton can all get the Angles back into the postseasn after a four-season playoff drought.

The Mariners will attempt to dash that optimism early on, by sending four-time All-Star Felix Hernandez to the mound.

The right-hander struck out more than 200 batters for the fifth straight season and made 31 starts, despite losing six of his last seven decisions in 2013.

Hernandez has struggled against the Los Angeles in the past, posting an 8-13 mark and 3.95 ERA in 35 career starts.

The Angels will counter with three-time All-Star Jered Weaver, who made only 24 starts in 2013, due to injuries.

The righty posted career low in victories last year, but did go 8-3 after the All-Star break after tossing the fewest innings in his career.

Weaver is 13-8 with a 3.23 ERA in 27 career starts against Seattle.

Matt’s Free Prediction:

Angels -Weaver’s sharp drop in velocity was a concern last season, but he has shown pretty well in five spring training starts, with a 3.74 ERA while allowing just nine runs over 21 2/3 innings with 15 K’s.

In the meantime, Trout is batted .407 with 22 hits including five home runs in spring training, and is batting .395 with one homer in 38 career at-bats against Hernandez.

Sorry Mariners’ fans, but the Halos have too much pop to lose this one at home to open the season.
