With four out five teams projected to be within 4 ½ games of one another, the NL West should be an exciting division to watch this season. Last year the Dodgers won the division by three games, finishing with a record of 95-67, which was the best in the National League. Colorado finished second at 92-70, keeping the race close through the last week of the season.

They earned the NL Wildcard spot in the playoffs, but were eliminated by the Phillies three games to one in the Division Series. San Francisco was third with a record of 88-74, which was an improvement of 16 wins from the prior season. In fourth place was San Diego with a record of 75-87, 20 games out of first. Bringing up the rear was Arizona as they finished 25 games back with a record of 70-92, 16 wins less than they had in 2008.

Here is a look at each team in the NL West’s odds to win the division this season as well as the over/under on their season win totals.

Arizona Diamondbacks
Odds to Win the NL West   4-1
Win Total Over/Under 82

To help bolster their pitching, the D-Backs added Ian Kennady and Edwin Jackson and are hoping for the healthy return of Brandon Webb. Adding 2B Kelly Johnson should help the infield and they do have some bats in Justin Upton and Gerardo Parra which gives them a good chance to add 12 more wins to last year’s total.

Colorado Rockies
Odds to Win the NL West   5-2
Win Total Over/Under 84

Ubaldo Jimenez and Aaron Cook will anchor the starting rotation, but there are still some question marks in the bullpen. They have a solid batting lineup led by players such as Dexter Fowler and Carlos Gonzalez. With the talent on this team, the Rockies should be able to once again push LA for the division title. Los Angeles Dodgers
Odds to Win the NL West   8-5
Win Total Over/Under 86.5

The Dodgers have pretty much the same lineup that they had last year, but they still lack a bona fide ace in the starting rotation. With players like Manny Ramirez, Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp there is still enough power on this team to win their third straight division title.

San Diego Padres
Odds to Win the NL West   35-1
Win Total Over/Under 72.5

In an effort to turn things around, the Padres have undergone some reconstructive surgery on their entire lineup this offseason. They brought in C Yorvit Torrealbas and starting pitcher Jon Garland. They also added outfielders Scott Hairston and Aaron Cunningham. If all these changes come together, they could get close to 80 wins this year.

San Francisco Giants
Odds to Win the NL West   3-1
Win Total Over/Under 82.5

The Giants are led by 2009 NL CY Young winner Tim Lincecum. Along with Barry Zito and Matt Cain they should have one of the better rotations in the National League. Offensively, they signed Mark Derosa to add some more power to the lineup and along with Juan Uribe and Pablo Sandoval should be fairly solid in this area as well. Look for the Giants to be near the top of the West all season long.
