The Giants (34-19) have the best record in major league baseball and are winners of four of their last five including a 5-0 win over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday. Third baseman Pablo Sandoval led the offensive charge, going 2-for-3 to increase his hitting streak to eight contests.

He has at least one RBI in each game of his streak and has five homers in the last 10 contests.

St. Louis (29-24) meanwhile, has won 10 of 14 games, but lost two of three to the New York Yankees earlier this week.

The Cardinals took four out of six games with San Francisco in 2013, outscoring the Giants 37-12. They averaged nearly nine runs per game and will get a boost to their offense on Thursday, as they are expected to return first baseman Matt Adams back into the DH spot in the lineup for the opener.

The Giants will try to reverse that trend, by sending veteran Ryan Vogelsong to the hill in game one. The right-hander is 2-0 in his last two starts, including a 2-1 win over Minnesota back on May 24. He held the Twins scoreless on just three hits over 6 2/3 innings while striking out seven.

Vogelsong also held the Marlins scoreless in his prior start.

It will be the first time the 36-year-old has faced the Cardinals during his 14-year career.

St. Louis will counter with Jaime Garcia, who registered his first win of the season, a 6-3 win at Cincinnati on May 24.

The lefty slung 5 2/3 innings in that one, allowing just two earned runs on six hits, while striking out seven in just his second start of the season, since undergoing major shoulder surgery.

Garcia has issued no walks this season and is 2-1 with a 1.27 career ERA against the Giants, who has only received four free passes from the 27-year-old.

Matt’s Free Prediction: San Francisco

The Giants are playing well and while the Cardinals are probably one of the only teams in baseball to possibly slow them down, I don’t expect Garcia to be the one to get it done.
