The Giants (21-11) battled the Pirates to a 11-10 victory in Monday, that ended with Jean Machi’s sacrifice, which led to the eventual winning run in the bottom of the 13th inning of the series opener.

Game one was a slugfest, as the teams combined for 36 hits, which was a complete 180 degrees for the Giants, who had allowed a total of only five runs over their previous five games.

But when the going got tough, San Fran called on its bullpen from help, which included a scoreless 13th from Sergio Romo, who came in and posted his 10th save of the season.

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh (12-20)will hope to have a little of Monday night’s offense left to support right-hander Charlie Morton, who is still searching for his first win of the season in four starts this year.

That stretch has pushed Morton’s winless skid to 11, during which, he has suffered from a huge lack of run support. He is 3-4 against the Giants lifetime, despite a 2.86 ERA in nine meetings.

The Giants will counter with veteran Tim Hudson, who is off to a great start in his first season wearing a San Francisco uniform. The iron arm has gone a minimum of seven innings in each of his six starts, allowing just two earned runs or fewer in five of them.

Hudson is 6-6 with a 3.40 ERA in 13 starts against Pittsburgh, and will look to keep the Pirates off the board on Tuesday.

Especially, third baseman Pedro Alvarez, who homered Monday, and is 4-for-10 with a home run against the right hander.

That’s because Alvarez is the only Pittsburgh player from the team’s current lineup, who has homered off Hudson.

MLB Notes

1. San Francisco had homered in 11 straight games before failing to go deep Monday. The Giants have 21 homers over their last 12 games.
2. Giants CF Angel Pagan is 9-for-12 against Morton with a double and two triples.
3. Pirates 3B Pedro Alvarez, who homered Monday, is 4-for-10 with a home run against Hudson. He is the only Pittsburgh player who has taken the right-hander deep.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Giants

The Pirates have scored a total of seven runs in four starts behind Morton — all losses — while San Francisco had homered in 11 straight games before Monday’s matchup.

The Giants have 21 homers over their last 12 games, and with a solid outing from Hudson, shouldn’t need many to get the win here.
