San Francisco

Not bad for a team I am still not sure has enough offense.  There is no doubting their pitching though as they have the third best staff ERA in the league a just over 3.

They might even get better on the mound if we start to to see better performances from the likes of Matt Cain and Tuesday starter Tim Lincecum.

If they keep up their impressive pace it will be the pitching that does it.

Lincecum continues to perplex but I wonder if maybe his career has stabilized, just not at a level near his early career form.

However, if your 4th or 5th starter doesn’t miss turns and can strike out more than a batter than you have a pretty deep rotation. Lincecum was sharp in his last  outing with 5 shutout innings against the Cubs.

Watch the wires though as he has a blister and might be forced to skip this turn.

Cincinnati

The Reds return home on a three game winning streak but they are still struggling to play consistent baseball. On their recent west coast strip they struggled with the Dodgers but played better against Arizona.

This series against the Dodgers will be the third in a row against teams from the West.

Cincinnati is still waiting for their offense to start clicking.  With or without Joey Votto in the lineup they have really struggled even though their home park is known to be a launching pad.

Until the offense gets better it will be hard for them to win consistently.

While the offense has struggled the pitching has been solid even if Homer Bailey has not.  Bailey has an ERA over 5 which is no surprise given that he is getting hit more often than ever and a lot of those hits are leaving the yard.

In fact it has been amazing that Cincinnati’s staff numbers are as good as they are given Bailey’s poor performance and the fact that Aroldis Chapman and Mat Latos have missed so much time.

I am surprised about the low total for this one given the location and the pitchers involved. The over is very enticing and if I was going to go with a side as well it would be Cincinnati. Bailey is better at home and the team is on a bit of a roll.

The total is probably the sharper way to play it but the Reds are pretty good value opening this series at home.

Total prediction:  Over
Score prediction:  Cincinnati 6 – San Francisco 4
