ATS Matchup Insight | CappersPicks Insider Preview

The Giants who still leads the National League West by 5.5 games (43-27), are suffering through their first real setback of 2014, and have lost four straight, including a 8-2 loss in the series opener on Tuesday, as Gordon Beckham and Dayan Viciedo each hit two-run homers.

The pitching staff, which is normally dependable, has struggled in defeats in seven of eight, and has gotten no help from the SF offense.

The White Sox (33-37) in the meantime, have also been struggling of late, after getting off to a good start earlier in the campaign.

Chicago had dropped seven of nine before the pitching and hitting finally came together in Tuesday’s win over the Giants, and they will look to keep their streak alive by sending pitching ace Chris Sale to the mound on Wednesday.

The southpaw is going for win number six against the heavy hitting lineup of San Francisco, who has yet to face during his five years in the majors. Sale is 5-1 with 1.97 ERA in nine outings with a 0.67 WHIP.

The Giants will counter with veteran Tim Hudson who is one reason San Francisco sits atop the NL West.

The right-hander has a 7-2 record with a 1.81 ERA in 12 outings this season and is 4-3 with a 5.15 ERA in nine career starts against the White Sox. Hudson has posted three wins in his last four appearances allowing just five runs and posting two shutouts.

Notes

1. White Sox 3B Conor Gillaspie had two hits in the series opener against the team that drafted him in the first round in 2008 and traded him to Chicago prior to the start of the 2013 season.
2. San Francisco CF Angel Pagan (back) is likely to miss his third consecutive game.
3. Chicago DH Adam Dunn has struck out 12 times over the last six games but is 11-for-34 with four homers against Hudson.

Matt’s Free Prediction: San Francisco –

The line favors Chicago here and I just don’t see it.

With Hudson on the mound for San Francisco, I expect the Giants to get the better of Sale to get the slim nod here.
