San Diego (12-14) arrives back in California, coming off a 4-2 win at the Washington Nationals on Sunday, behind a season-high nine strikeouts over seven strong innings from pitcher Ian Kennedy.

The win split the four-game series with Washington as Cameron Maybin had two hits and scored once in his season debut with the Friars, and Chris Denorfia had two RBIs and reached base four times on two hits and two walks.

Maybin missed the first 25 games with San Diego, due to a biceps injury suffered during spring training.

To continue where they left off, the Padres will turn to starting pitcher Tyson Ross in game one against the Giants on Monday. The righty is 2-3, with a 3.16 ERA this season after 5-2 loss at Milwaukee in his last start. Ross was tagged for five runs and nine hits over six innings and surrendered two home runs.

The 27-year-old is 1-2, with a 3.21 ERA in four career starts against the Giants, including a 2-1 win at home on April 18, when he pitched eight shutout innings, allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out a season-high nine.

San Francisco will counter that effort this time around with 24-year-old Madison Bumgarner who is 2-2, with a 3.14 ERA on the year.

The lefty is coming off a 2-1 loss, his second in as many starts, against the Colorado Rockies on April 22, when he allowed two runs and nine hits while striking out six in eight innings. He is 6-3, with a 3.30 ERA lifetime versus the Padres and will look to push his record to .500 with a win on Monday night.

Bumgarner will hope to get a little more help from the Giants offense in this one.

The lineup produced four runs on eight hits in a 4-0 with to Cleveland on Sunday.

As a team the Giants (15-10) had scored 22 runs in their prior three games coning into Sunday’s contest with the Indians, including a 12 run outing in Colorado on April 23. However, in eight games prior to that San Francisco had scored an average of 1.875 runs per game, including six games where they scored two runs or less.

Notes

1. The Padres’ 12 victories this month rate as their best April performance since winning 15 in 2010.
2. Giants C Buster Posey is 3-for-7 over the last two games after a 3-for-36 slump over his previous 12 contests.
3. San Diego RHP Huston Street is 9-for-9 in save opportunities and has allowed just one run – a homer by Giants 1B Brandon Belt on April 18.

Matt’s Free Prediction: UNDER – The Giants and the Padres both rely on their pitching rather than their offense.

With the unpredictability of both teams at the moment, the safe bet is on the total in this one to stay under the predicted number.
