San Diego Padres vs. New York Mets Preview

The Mets are only 2 games back of the Nationals in the tough NL East while the Padres may already be out of the playoff picture since they are in the basement of the NL West 14.5 games back of the Dodgers.

In their last games the Mets beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-1 while the Padres lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 6-3.

This season the Padres have an O/U record of 20-23 with a run-line W/L record of 20-25 and the Mets have an O/U record of 26-17 with a run-line W/L record of 23-21.

The Mets are 12-8 at home this season and the Padres are a MLB worst 4-13 on the road.

Eric Stults (0-0, 2.70 ERA) makes his first start for the Padres tonight after being claimed off waivers from the White Sox and in his last outing he gave up 2 earned runs in 6 innings in a no decision against the Angels.

Jeremy Hefner (0-1, 2.25 ERA) is on the hill for the Mets and in his last start gave up 2 runs in 5 innings in a loss to the Blue Jays. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Stults is 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA in 3 career starts against the Mets, but he has not faced New York since way back in 2007.

Hefner has spent most of the season in AAA and tonight’s game is his first start of the season.

The Padres will likely need a good start from Stults since their offense only ranks 29th in the Majors in runs scored and 28th in team batting average.

The Mets’ offense ranks a respectable 14th in runs, scored but they have been struggling as of late. David Wright leads the NL in hitting, but as a team the Mets are batting only .223 in their last 11 games and only .209 with runners in scoring position.

In some betting trends for this NL match up the Padres are 2-5 in their last 7 overall, 6-23 in their last 29 road games vs. a team with a winning record, and they have an Under record of 4-1 in their last 5 games.

The Mets are 7-3 in their last 10 home games, 3-8 in their last 11 games as a home favorite, and they have an Over record of 18-7-1 in their last 26 games.

Jason’s Pick: Even with a struggling Mets’ offense I think they will win tonight facing a weak Padres’ team.
