MLB Game Preview For August 31, 2010: Colorado Rockies @ San Francisco Giants

The betting world can only watch as the San Francisco Giants continue to make things more difficult for themselves. The Giants have gone 5-5 in their last 10 games and have given up a game in the standings to the Colorado Rockies who have won six of their last 10 and that includes a two-game winning streak.

San Francisco pitching really struggled against the hitting of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the last series, and the result was that the Giants only won one game in a series they should have swept. As NFL football betting and college football betting options start to open up in San Francisco, the Giants may find themselves forgotten until next spring if they do not start to win some games.

The Colorado Rockies just came off a successful series where they took two of three from the Los Angeles Dodgers and got to watch Manny Ramirez get thrown out of his last game as a Dodger after only one pitch. The Chicago White Sox may want to think long and hard about taking on a guy that gets thrown out of his last game after one pitch for arguing balls and strikes.

The Rockies pitching has been average, but their superb fielding in the last few games has more than made up for any problems on the mound. Colorado has also found their bats and have been scoring runs in bunches lately. The Giants should be grateful that this series is not in Colorado. With the way the Rockies have been hitting the ball, the thin air in Denver might work against the Giants.

If you follow MLB betting then you know that the Philadelphia Phillies hold the top spot in the race for the NL wild card with the Giants a game and a half back. The Rockies have climbed to within four and half games of the NL wild card and while the Rockies and Giants may not be able to catch the Padres for the NL West pennant, they both have a shot at the Phillies and the NL wild card berth.

In this game the Rockies will send Esmil Rogers to the plate. Rogers has a 2-2 record with a 5.66 ERA for the season. In his last start which was against the Atlanta Braves, Rogers gave up seven earned runs before the game was even two innings old. The Rockies could have passed Rogers in the rotation for this start, but injuries are forcing Colorado to put Rogers in the game.

The Giants are putting Madison Bumgarner on the mound with his 5-4 record and 3.95 ERA. Bumgarner is still a young pitcher at 21-years-old, but the Giants see something in him that keeps him on the starting rotation. This season Bumgarner is 0-2 at home with an ERA of over 6.00.

In the battle of struggling pitchers that seems to be the center of this game, the Giants definitely have the upper hand. But the Giant bats need to come back to life if they are going to take advantage of a Colorado pitcher who has shaky confidence and is coming off a terrible outing.

Pick: San Francisco Giants 4-1
