Cincinnati Reds vs Philadelphia Phillies – Wednesday, Oct. 6   5:07 P.M. (ET).
Cincinnati             +180
Philadelphia         -210
Total – 7

The 2010 NL Central champion Cincinnati Reds travel to Citizens Bank Park for the first two games of the NLDS against the NL East champion Philadelphia Phillies. Game 1 is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 6 with the first pitch at 5:07 p.m. (ET). It will be broadcast live on TBS.

Cincinnati will be making its first postseason appearance in 15 years after battling its way to a 91-71 overall record, five games ahead of the second-place St. Louis Cardinals. The Reds went 49-32 at home this season and 42-39 on the road. As an underdog they went 26-17 and were 76-73-13 against the ‘over/under’  line.

Right hander Edison Volquez will get the start in Game 1 for Cincinnati. This season he went 4-3 with an ERA of 4.31 in 12 starts. In his last outing he pitched six full innings, giving up seven hits and two earned runs in a win over Milwaukee. Lifetime against the Phillies he is 2-0 with a .73 ERA.

All season long it has been the Reds’  bats that have got the job done. They finished the regular season ranked first in the NL in hitting with a team batting average of .272 and 790 runs scored. If they are going to have any chance in this game, Joey Votto needs to come up big like he did all year long. He led the team with 177 hits, 113 RBI, and 37 HR’s. Former Phillie Scott Rolan has also been a big part of the offense this season with 83 RBI and 20 HR’s.

Philadelphia overcame a midseason slump to go on another end of the year tear to secure their fourth straight division title. The Phillies ended the year with the best record in baseball at 97-65, six games ahead of Atlanta, who earned the wildcard spot in the playoffs. They were 54-30 at home and 43-35 on the road. As the favorite they went 71-48 and were 74-85-3 against the ‘over/under’ line.

As expected, staff ace Roy Halladay will be on the mound in Game 1 for Philadelphia. He enters his first ever playoffs with a 21-10 regular season record and an ERA of just 2.44. In his last start he went nine full innings giving up just two hits and no earned runs in a win over Washington. This season against Cincinnati he was 1-1 with a 2.84 ERA.

The Phillies lineup is as healthy as it has been all season long and is once again presents a formidable challenge for any starting pitcher. They ended the season ranked fifth in team batting average at .260, but were ranked second right after the Reds in runs scored with 772. Ryan Howard remains their biggest threat at the plate after leading the team this year with 108 RBI and 31 HR’s.

The Phillies have won the last six games these two teams have played in Philadelphia dating back to July of last season. They also have also been able to give Halladay some extra rest which has proven in the past to result in almost an automatic win for his team. The added motivation of winning the first postseason game of his career will only make things worse for the Reds.
