Boston avoided a sweep at the hands of the resurgent Pittsburgh Pirates this past weekend with a 4-2 victory on Sunday as a 145 road favorite. The win kept the Red Sox a half game in back of New York in the AL East with an overall record of 45-32. Heading into this series they are 22-16 at home and 23-16 on the road.

The powerful Boston lineup only managed to score nine runs in its three games against Pittsburgh after racking up 43 runs in its previous five games. They still lead the AL in total runs with 409 and are ranked first in hitting with a .277 team batting average.

John Lackey is slated to get the start on Wednesday night. He is 5-6 this season with a 7.36 ERA. Last time out, he gave up five earned runs on four hits in just 3.1 innings of work. Lackey is 2-1 against the Phillies with an ERA of 3.44. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Philadelphia is 4-2 in its last six games after series wins over St. Louis and Oakland and raised its MLB-best record to 49-30. The Phillies have a 4.5 game lead over Atlanta in the NL East and they are 19-17 on the road and 30-13 at home.

Pitching is the main strength of this team as the lineup continues to struggle with getting runners across the plate. The Phillies have only managed to score a total of 11 runs in their last five games but came away with the win in three of them.

Vance Worley will be making his seventh start of the season in relief of Roy Oswalt. He is 2-1 with an ERA of 2.83. His last outing was a gem as he pitched five innings of hitless ball and gave up just one hit in a six-inning stint. He has given up just one earned runs in his last 11 innings pitched.

These two teams played each other six times last season with the Red Sox coming away with a 4-2 edge overall and a 2-1 edge on the road. This time around, stick with Boston to pound out a win as both lineups snap back to life.
