MLB Game Preview for August 12, 2010: Boston Red Sox @ Toronto Blue Jays

The betting on MLB is reaching the home stretch, and teams are clamoring for position in the pennant and wild card races. Before NFL betting can take over the American landscape, there are several races that need to be decided, and one of them is the AL wild card race.

The Tampa Bay Rays lead the Boston Red Sox by four and a half games for the AL wild card, but things have been swinging the Red Sox way lately. NCAA football betting has always taken a back seat in Boston to the Red Sox, but it looked for a little while this year like the college football teams may be in the news sooner as the Red Sox were drifting further and further from the playoffs.

The Rays hit a slide for a few games and had lost several games in a row while the Red Sox were making up ground. The Rays have recently found their winning ways again, but the Red Sox are not letting up and this wild card race could get very interesting before it is over.

The Toronto Blue Jays fell off the MLB betting radar a week or so ago when they dropped to 10 games out in the AL East and nine and a half games in the AL wild card. The Jays lost the first game of this very important series with the Red Sox, and that has highlighted the Jays struggles as of late and puts them further behind a team they have to catch in the standings.

For this game the Red Sox send John Lackey to the mound. Lackey has a 10-7 record and a 4.60 ERA, but as it becomes more apparent that staff ace Josh Beckett will not be able to pitch effectively the rest of this season, it is important that pitchers like Lackey step up. Immediately after the all-star break Lackey was on a three-game winning streak and it looked like he was ready to start picking up some of Beckett’s slack. But in his last start Lackey was hammered for five earned runs in six innings and he is sliding back into the ways that caused him to lose games in the first half of the season.

Newcomer Brad Mills will take the rotation spot of the injured Brett Cecil, and face the Red Sox in this game. Mills has a 1-0 record with a 4.09 ERA. Mills is up on a trial run from AAA, and it the Jays are not impressed. Mills is scheduled to go back to AAA immediately following this game. In his last start, which was a no-decision against the Rays, he gave up five earned runs in only four innings.

It is almost as if the Jays have thrown up the white flag in this series, and for the season, by putting Mills on the mound. There are plenty of experienced middle relievers that could start this game, but the Jays are going with someone that won’t even be in the majors the next morning. That says a lot about the Jays chances in this game and what the Jays feel their chances are for the rest of the season.

Pick: Boston Red Sox 6-3
