MLB Game Preview for September 21, 2010: Atlanta Braves @ Philadelphia Phillies

Sports betting experts suspected that the run that the Atlanta Braves were having this season could not last all season long. The biggest red flag for the Braves all season long was their road record. Right now the Braves have a 34-41 road record. Before NFL betting started for this season, the Braves were the only MLB division leader with a losing record on the road.

Once the footballs started flying, the Braves spiraled downward out of first place in the NL East.

The Philadelphia Phillies are not doing much of anything different now than they have been doing all season long. The Phillies are still hitting the ball very well, and their starting pitching rotation is one of the best in baseball. Philadelphia has been able to stay consistent, and when the Braves slipped and fell the Phillies were able to slide into first place in the NL East.

Now the MLB betting focus in Atlanta is on trying to retain their NL East lead and making sure the Braves stay in front in the NL wild card race. If the Braves cannot catch the Phillies for the NL East pennant, then they want to be able to get into the playoffs with the wild card.

Right now, the Braves are holding a two and a half game lead in the NL wild card race over the San Diego Padres who fell out of the NL West lead.

The Braves have been able to put together a three-game winning streak recently, which has brought them favorable sportsbook reviews. There are cracks starting to show in the Braves team that could be cause for long-term concern in Atlanta.

Starting on the mound for the Braves in this game is rookie Mike Minor. He has a 3-1 record and a 5.84 ERA this season. Minor started off the season strong, but in his last four starts he has been suspect. His only decision in his last three starts was a loss after racking up three consecutive wins. He has given up 20 hits in his last three starts but he has not pitched past the fifth inning in any of them.

He gave up a grand slam in his last start. The Braves need to be wondering if the rookie is starting to experience fatigue in his arm as he may not yet be ready for the pro rotation.

Cy Young candidate Roy Halladay starts this game for the Phillies. Halladay was able to weather the early part of the season when the Phillies were unable to give him much run support, and he now has a 19-10 record with a 2.49 ERA.

The Phillies are getting exactly what they need from Halladay, and he is starting to get extra days off in the lead up into the playoffs.

It looks like the Braves need to concern themselves with the NL wild card as their starting pitching has not allowed them to stay in contention for the NL East pennant.

The Braves are ill-equipped to get into a pitching battle with the Phillies as Philadelphia’s starting rotation and bullpen are getting into a playoff groove.

Pick: Philadelphia Phillies 5-2
