Jon Lester (2010: 19-9, 3.25 ERA)
No team was more active over the offseason than the Boston Red Sox. The team acquired Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez, which should make their lineup far more potent than it was last year. Much is expected of this team in 2011. Can they live up to the expectations?
Jon Lester will start the year on the hill for the Red Sox, and Lester appears ready for a strong season. The young left-hander has had an ERA of 3.41 or better in each of the last three seasons. The rest of the Red Sox rotation is filled out by Lackey, Buchholz, Beckett, and Matsuzaka. I would expect the Red Sox to have one of the better rotations this year, but this staff has been a little inconsistent the last few years. Papelbon will anchor the bullpen again this year, and I expect him to bounce back from a bit of a down year in 2010.
On the offensive side, the Red Sox definitely have one of the best lineups in all of baseball. Carl Crawford will add a lot of speed to this lineup, and Gonzalez will a lot a ton of pop. The middle of the order for Boston will have guys like Youkilis, Gonzalez, and Ortiz. If Ortiz can have a big year in 2011, the Red Sox will likely lead the league in runs scored.
Texas Rangers (0-0)
C.J. Wilson (2010: 15-8, 3.35 ERA)
The Texas Rangers lost out in their bid for Cliff Lee, but the American League Champions from 2010 still have quite a bit of talent left in their dugout. Adrian Beltre was a big acquisition for the team, and they have plenty of young hitting stars.
C.J. Wilson emerged as a staff ace last year, and the Rangers will need a repeat performance out of Wilson this year. Colby Lewis is a good second starter, but the three through five spots in the Texas rotation are a bit of a question mark. This team got quality starts out of a lot of guys last year, but can they do it again in 2011? The bullpen is very good, and that is an area of strength for the Rangers.
The lineup is definitely strong, with Josh Hamilton in the middle of the order. Hamilton is improving each year, and he is definitely one of the best hitters in the game today. Mitch Moreland is expected to have a big year as the starter at first base. Nelson Cruz and Ian Kinsler are capable of huge years if they can stay healthy. Expect this team to score a lot of runs in the Texas heat this year.
