MLB odds: Cardinals -133, Reds +113

2010 has been a banner season for the young, exciting Cincinnati Reds. Now it’s time to see what they’re really made of.

They lead the St. Louis Cardinals by two games in the National League Central and can either distance themselves or relinquish their lead this week at home to their rivals.

Youngster Mike Leake, now famous for his rare transition from college to the majors without any minor-league experience, gets the nod for Cincinnati tonight.

He’s established himself as an effective innings eater in 2010 but has come back to Earth of late as teams see him for the second time. Leake has a 6.06 ERA since the All-Star Break.

Leake already beat the St. Louis Cardinals once at home this year – but that was in May. It’ll be interesting to see how they handle him the second time around. Divisional rivals like the Pirates and
Astros hammered Leake recently after he’d sparkled against him earlier in the season.

Chris Carpenter is his usual dominant self of late, having allowed three or fewer runs in five straight starts. Despite Cincy’s abundance of lefty power bats, Carpenter owns them historically, going 10-3 with a 1.96 ERA. He should pitch around MVP candidate Joey Votto, however; Votto bats .400 off him for his career.

Given that Leake is starting to take his rookie lumps and Carpenter’s rock-solid history against the Reds, the Cardinals make sense tonight.
