Pittsburgh won Game 1 of this series 3-1 as a 175 road underdog, but on Tuesday night, found itself on the wrong end of a 4-3 marathon that ended on an extremely questionable call in the 19th inning. The loss knocked the Pirates out of a first-place tie with St. Louis in the NL Central and could prove costly down the road in that division race.

They are now 53-48 on the year, 26-25 at home and 27-23 on the road.

This magical season for the upstart Pirates has been made possible by a solid pitching staff that is ranked fifth in the NL with a team ERA of 3.36. They will send Kevin Correia to the mound for the series finale. The right-hander is 11-8 with a 4.38 ERA in 21 previous starts this year. His last time out was one of his worst, giving up seven earned runs on eight hits in just 4.2 innings of work.

Atlanta desperately needed that win on Tuesday night to keep Philadelphia within its sights in the NL East. The Braves are 60-44 overall and six games back in the division. They are 29-24 on the road this season and 31-20 at home. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Pitching has also been the force behind Atlanta’s success this season as it is ranked just ahead of the Pirates in the NL with a 3.31 team ERA. The Braves will counter with Derek Lowe in Thursday’s game. He has struggled as of late, giving up 12 earned runs on 18 hits in his last 17.1 innings pitched.

Lowe is 6-8 on the year with an ERA of 4.49. He is a perfect 10-0 against Pittsburgh in his career with a 2.64 ERA.

Lowe has obviously owned the Pirates in the past, but the runs could pile up quickly in this one given the current form of both these starters.

Stick with Pittsburgh to grind out a win as a bit a payback for Tuesday’s loss.
