The Philadelphia Phillies travel to Sun Life Stadium in South Florida to begin a three game weekend series against the Marlins starting tonight at 7:10 P.M.

Philadelphia is coming off a horrible road trip to New York where the Mets beat them three straight games by a combined score of 16-0. It is the first this club has been shutout in three straight games since 1983. The Major League record for consecutive shutouts is four. The Phillies are now 26-20, just 1 ½ games ahead of Atlanta in the NL East. They are 13-10 SU on the road and 8-2 ATS as an underdog. Their record against the under/over line is 20-25-1.

Kyle Kendrick will be on the mound tonight for the Phils. In nine starts this season, the right hander is 2-2 with an ERA of 5.66. In his last outing he only lasted 4.2 innings, giving up eight hits and five earned runs in a loss to the Red Sox. Lifetime against Florida he is 2-2 with an ERA of 6.46.

This historic scoring slump has dropped the usually powerful Phillies team batting average to .266, fourth in the NL. They have not scored a run in 27 consecutive innings but even scarier is the fact they have not scored in 46 of their past 47 innings.

Florida has gone 4-6 SU in their last 10 games and is coming off two straight losses to Atlanta. Their overall record is 24-24, and with the Phillies recent slide they are just three games back in the East. They have a home record of 13-12 and are 15-11 ATS as the favorite. The total has gone over in five of the Marlins last seven home games.

Right hander Chris Volstad gets the start tonight for Florida. So far this season he has a record of 3-5 in nine starts with an ERA of 4.31. In his last game on the road against the White Sox, he gave up seven hits and three earned runs in six innings of work, getting tagged with the loss. He is 2-2 with a 3.21 ERA against Philadelphia in his career.

The Marlins team batting average is .261, ranked ninth in the NL. Their 222 runs scored ranks them seventh in the league. Jorge Cantu remains the biggest offensive threat on this team. In 181 at bats he has 52 hits, 36 runs batted in, and eight homeruns. Dan Uggla is not far behind with 31 RBI’s and 12 HR’s.

It is just a matter of time before the Phillies bats explode to snap out of this slump as this team is just too good to keep putting up goose eggs night after night. Volstad could be exactly what they need to get off the schnied.
