The 2010 National League East Champion Philadelphia Phillies finish up their regular season with a three game series with the Atlanta Braves, who are still trying to nail the wildcard spot in the NL. Game 1 is scheduled for 7:35 p.m. tonight at Turner Field in Atlanta.

Philadelphia’s blistering 21-6 record in the month of September locked up its fourth straight division title. It also helped to ensure the Phillies have home-field advantage throughout the postseason by virtue of clinching the best record in the league. They are 95-64 overall and 41-24 on the road. As an underdog they have a record of 24-16 and are 72-84-3 against the over/under line.

Right hander Kyle Kendrick will get the start for Philadelphia tonight. He is 10-10 on the year with an ERA of 4.76 in 30 starts. Last time out he pitched 6.1 innings giving up six hits and three earned runs in a loss to the Mets. Lifetime against Atlanta he is 4-1 with a 2.53 ERA.

Much of the Phillies starting lineup will remain intact for this series as skipper Charlie Manual wants his team to remain sharp heading into the playoffs. They are ranked fifth in the NL in hitting with a team batting average of .260 and they are ranked third in runs scored with 747. Ryan Howard leads the team with 106 RBI and 31 HR’s.

Atlanta currently leads San Diego in the wildcard race by two games with an overall record of 90-69. The Braves have the best home record in the NL at 55-23 and are 76-42 as a favorite. Against the over/under line they are 72-78-9. The total has stayed ‘under’ in their last five home games.

The Braves will go with rookie right hander Brandon Beachy as their starter tonight. Since being brought up from the minors he has made two previous starts and is 0-1 with a 2.89 ERA. In his last outing he gave up five hits and two earned runs in five innings of work. His first career start was against the Phillies and he went 4.1 innings, giving up four hits and one earned run.

Atlanta has been struggling at the plate down the stretch. The Braves have only averaged 3.4 runs per game in the month of September as compared to their 4.56 runs per game average on the year. They are ranked sixth in the NL in hitting with a team batting average of .258.

Philadelphia is 4-2 in its last six games against the Braves including a three game sweep just last week, but the motivation to win this game clearly belongs to Atlanta. A victory tonight coupled with a San Diego loss puts them in the postseason so go with Braves in this one.
