Saturday Philadelphia Phillies vs Seattle Mariners

The Phillies have the best record in the Majors, not surprising with their stacked pitching staff, but they will be tested in this game facing last year’s Cy Young winner Felix Hernandez.

Philadelphia Phillies (44-26 through June 17)
Vance Worley (2-1 3.75 ERA)

The Phillies have been on fire lately and coming into this series they have won 7 straight and 8 of their last 10 games. Their pitching has been stellar in their last 7 games and while their offense only ranks 20th in runs scored they have scored at least 5 runs in 6 of their last 7 games.

One thing the Mariners have going for them in this game is they will be facing Philadelphia spot-starter Worley, who was shelled in his last outing and has given up 11 earned runs in his last 8 innings pitched.

Phillies’ slugger Ryan Howard is putting up MVP numbers ranking 7th in the NL in HR and 2nd in RBI and in June he has hit 3 HR with 15 RBI. Unlike last season there is not much pop in the Philadelphia lineup, as Howard is the only player with over 8 HR. Raul Ibanez is the guy with the 8 HR, but this month he is struggling only hitting .226 and he has yet to go yard.

Seattle Mariners (35-34 through June 17)
Felix Hernandez (7-5 3.30 ERA)

The Mariners are only 4-6 in their last 10 games, but they only trail the Rangers by 1/2 game in the weak AL West heading into this series. Hernandez will likely have to pitch well in this game, as the Seattle offense only ranks 28th in runs scored and 30th in team batting average. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Hernandez bounced back in his last start after a poor previous start and the Mariners are 4-1 in his last 5 starts.

The Seattle offense has only averaged 2.7 runs in their last 10 games and the leading everyday hitter is Adam Kennedy and he is only hitting .275. I mean, hit machine Ichiro Suzuki is only hitting .269 and Justin Smoak and Miguel Olivo are the only Mariners that have over 30 RBI. Still, facing Worley in this game they have a legit chance to score some runs.

MLB Trends

PHI is 7-0 in their last 7 games.
PHI is 1-4 in their last 5 road games.
PHI is 7-2 in their last 9 interleague games.
Over is 6-2-1 in Phillies last 9 road games.
SEA is 4-0 in their last 4 interleague games against teams with a winning record.
SEA is e 4-1 in their last 5 interleague games.
Under is 5-0 in Mariners last 5 interleague games against teams with a winning record.

The Pick:

The Phillies may be the beat team right now, but it is because of their starting pitching. With spot-starter Worley facing Hernandez the edge has to go to the Mariners even though they have a weak offense.

Phillies vs. Mariners Prediction: Mariners 6 Phillies 3
