Philadelphia Phillies (0-2) vs Atlanta Braves (2-0)

Philadelphia

I liked Philadelphia as a sleeper team in the National League East this season but right now they are looking like they care closer to the Marlins than the Nationals and Braves.

Lefty Cliff Lee is good enough to stifle any lineup so getting him in an underdog role looks like a nice value opportunity tonight. Last year might have left a sting though as despite strong peripherals he didn’t get very many wins. The odds are that that will reverse to some extent this season so I think we can hit on Philadelphia this evening.

His numbers vs Atlanta are solid and ironically better at Turner Field than at home (3-1). The Phillies lineup is also likely to be stronger against righties than lefties this season.

Atlanta

The Braves are off to a 2-0 start so there is not much to complain about so far. They are looking to close out their series against rival Philadelphia with a sweep and have a great chance to get on a real run with series against the Cubs and Marlins to follow. The best thing right now for the Braves is that the lineup is living up to expectation.

OF Justin Upton has already jacked two bombs and mainstays 1B Freddie Freeman and OF Jason Heyward are off to good starts after the first couple of contests. Justin’s brother B.J. is scuffling but it has only been a couple of games. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Starter Kris Medlen was one of the better stories of last season…almost too good to be true. He made a dozen starts for the Braves last year and was virtually unbeatable while posting a scant 1.57 ERA.

Medlen is one of the least intimidating pitchers is all of baseball and nothing he had done in the majors previously foretold that kind of success which means that this first start could be the best value opportunity against him we see all season.

Last year as a starter he avoided the Phillies but his few inning of work against them in relief were uninspiring (8.00 ERA)

O/U Pick: Over

Score Prediction: Philadelphia 6 – Atlanta 3

This is a nice spot to play Philadelphia. Cliff Lee is the more reliable started to back and the Phillies are a veteran team that will be feeling it more to get into the win column.

Getting the underdog value in this one is too hard to ignore. Baseball is all about value and there is a ton in this one.
