The Padres and the Phillies play the first of a three game weekend series tonight at Citizens Bank Park with the first pitch slated for 7:05 P.M.

San Diego has continued to hang tough in the NL West with an overall record of 32-21. They have a one game lead over the Dodgers and a 3 ½ game lead over the Giants. The road has been kind to the Padres as they have 14-9 record SU away from Petco Park. They are 18-15 ATS as a dog this season but are only 18-30-5 against the over/under line.

They have only beaten the Phillies twice in their last eight meetings but both of those wins came on the road.

Right hander Mat Latos will be on the mound tonight for San Diego. In his first 10 starts he has a 5-3 record with a 3.08 ERA. In his last outing he lasted six innings, giving up four hits and two earned runs while getting the decision. This will be Latos first career start against the Phillies.

While their overall pitching has been fantastic so far, their batting remains the fundamental weakness of this team. They are currently ranked 13th in the NL with a team average of just .249. Adrian Gonzalez leads the team with 32 RBI’s but as a team they rank 12th with 229 runs scored.

For Philadelphia, what started out as a slump is close to turning into a major free fall as the NL Champions have now lost eight of their last 10 including being swept by the Mets and the Braves.

They are 28-24 overall and find themselves 2 ½ games in back of Atlanta in the NL East. They are 19-18 ATS as a favorite and 22-29-1 against the over/under line.

The good news for the Phillies is that it is Roy Halladay’s turn in the rotation. Halladay is coming off a perfect game in his last outing, recording only the 20th in Major League history last Saturday against the Marlins. On the year he is 7-3 in 11 starts with an ERA of just 1.99.

The bad news has been this team’s extended hitting slump. In the last 11 games they have averaged just 1.3 runs per game and have been shut out five times. Once leading the NL, they are currently ranked sixth with a team average of .259. With their recent scoring drought they have dropped to 11th in runs scored with 238.

Latos has been a pleasant surprise for the Padres that just keeps getting better after posting four wins with an ERA of just 1.54 in the month of May.

Unfortunately he is up against an opposing pitcher that is a few more notches up in his weight class and just hates to lose.

Halladay will only need a couple of runs to win his eighth game of the season so stick with the Phillies in this one.
