MLB Game Preview for August 14. 2010: San Diego Padres @ San Francisco Giants

If you plan on betting on baseball the rest of August, then you will want to keep a close eye on the NL West. The San Diego Padres and the San Francisco Giants have been battling it out for the NL West pennant all season long. As the MLB betting season winds down and the NFL betting season gets started along with NCAA football betting, the Giants and the Padres are still fighting it out and now they get to do it head-to-head.

As this series starts the Giants trail the Padres by two and a half games for the NL West pennant. On the flip side, the Giants lead the Philadelphia Phillies by one game in the NL wild card race. But the close the Giants get to the Padres, the less the wild card means to San Francisco.

Leading into this series both the Giants and the Padres are on winning streaks. The Padres have won six of their last 10 including four wins in a row over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Giants are .500 in their last 10 games, but they are currently on a two-game winning streak that started with two straight wins over the Chicago Cubs.

Mat Latos takes the mound for the Padres, and he is just one of many in the San Diego starting rotation that is ready for the playoffs to start. Latos is 12-5 this season with an ERA of only 2.36. In his last 10 starts Latos has kept opponents to two earned runs or less. His last start was six shutout innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He has had command over his control all season long, and in his last few games he has shown that he is ready to pitch against the best teams in the league.

Madison Bumgarner starts for the Giants, and in a staff full of star pitchers Bumgarner is still clawing for some respect. He has a 4-4 record this season but a respectable 3.36 ERA. The Giants are desperately trying to get Bumgarner back on track this season as his last start was only 5 and 2/3 innings where he allowed 3 earned runs. Tim Lincecum will need some help if the Giants are going to go far into the playoffs, and Bumgarner is one of the pitchers that the Giants need to get going before the playoffs.

You have two hot teams clashing for what could be the most important series of the season. If the Giants sweep the series then they come out in first place in the NL West with a fairly light schedule ahead of them. If the Padres can sweep then they put some much-needed breathing room between themselves and the Giants.

Lincecum will start the second game of this series, and he will start against a struggling Wade LeBlanc for the Padres. The Giants have to take this game if they want to increase their chances of winning the NL West pennant. The Giants have the bats, now they just need to get their pitching back in order.

Pick: San Francisco Giants 4-1
