New York Yankees (9-5)
A.J. Burnett (3-0, 4.67)

The Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays’ early-season struggles almost seemed to distract from the fact that the Yankees have played pretty solid baseball for the first two weeks of 2011.

Predictably, it’s been the Yanks’ offense doing the heavy lifting. Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira and Robinson Cano have all mashed the ball in the early going. Jorge Posada and Russell Martin have also chipped in a bunch of homers.

The Yankees’ pitching, also predictably, hasn’t been great. But good run support has masked those troubles so far. Take A.J. Burnett. He has a 4.67 ERA through three starts but he’s 3-0. It will be interesting, however, to see how he does at Rogers Centre on Tuesday.

Blue Jay fans hate Burnett for bolting from them after they helped him revive his career. They boo him mercifully every time he visits Toronto and it usually seems to rattle him. Burnett s 2-4 with a 5.84 ERA and 10 homers allowed in just 49.1 innings against the Jays.

Toronto Blue Jays (7-9)
Kyle Drabek (1-0, 1.93)

After improving to 7-6, the Jays ended up catching the Boston Red Sox at the wrong time. They were the slump buster, handing the BoSox three straight wins. The bats went a bit cold and their pitching really went south.

Can rookie Kyle Drabek right the ship? He’s still struggling with walks but his strikeout rate his healthy. He lost his one career start against the Yankees last year but hardly looked over matched, allowing three runs and no homers over six innings.

MLB Trends:

Over is 8-1 in NYY last 9 vs. American League East.
Over is 7-2 in NYY last 9 games following a win.
Over is 8-3-1 in NYY last 12 road games.
Under is 10-2 in TOR last 12 on astroturf.
TOR are 2-7 in their last 9 overall.
TOR are 10-3 in their last 13 home games.
Over is 6-1-1 in the last 8 meetings.
NYY are 3-7 in the last 10 meetings in Toronto.

The pick:

History has taught us to bet against the Yankees when A.J. Burnett visits Toronto and I think bettors should follow the trend on Tuesday. Toronto hasn’t played a home game in 12 days; its fans will be hungry and attendance should be high with the Bronx Bombers in town. That means the crowd will be all over Burnett as usual.

I also think Drabek will have that rookie mystique going as a relative unknown to the Yankee hitters, so that will help Toronto’s cause as well.

Yankees vs Blue Jays prediction: Blue Jays 6, Yankees 3
