Chicago White Sox (44-48)
Gavin Floyd (6-9, 4.59)

The All-Star break is over, they’re extremely fortunate to still be in the American League Central race, and they have a golden opportunity to gain ground with a weekend series against the Detroit Tigers.

Topping the list of White Sox players who must step it up in the second half: Adam Dunn. The big fella was expected to crush homers at cushy U.S. Cellular Field. Instead, Dunn hit just .160 with nine homers in his first 78 games. He’s just 1 for 10 against Detroit’s Friday-night starter, Justin Verlander. But, in typical Dunn fashion, that hit was a homer.

Gavin Floyd starts for Chicago on Friday and he, too has underachieved this season. His ERA has jumped by half a run this and he’s allowed four or more runs in four of his last seven starts. However, Floyd has lost just once in 14 career starts against the Tigers, so maybe a trip to Comerica is what he needs. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Detroit Tigers (49-43)
Justin Verlander (12-4, 2.15)

To call Justin Verlander hot wouldn’t do his current streak justice. He’s 7-1 in his last eight starts; he’s allowed one or zero earned runs in seven straight outings. The man is just devouring the competition right now. His WHIP of 0.87 has a chance to challenge for a modern-era record. Verlander is also 2-0 against the White Sox this season.

Detroit could be brimming with confidence entering the second half after Verlander, first baseman Miguel Cabrera, shortstop Jhonny Peralta, catcher Alex Avila and closer Jose Valverde made the 2011 AL All-Star team. I worried about this team’s lack of depth to start the season; maybe I was wrong.

MLB Trends

Under is 17-6-3 in CHW last 26 overall.
Under is 17-6-3 in CHW last 26 on grass.
DET are 1-7 in their last 8 Fri. games.
Over is 9-3-1 in DET last 13 Fri. games.
DET are 9-1 in Verlanders last 10 starts.
CHW are 3-13 in the last 16 meetings.
Over is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings.

MLB Free pick:

Even though Verlander is 9-9 all-time against the White Sox and Floyd is 5-1 against the Tigers, I suggest we toss those numbers out the window. Both guys are different pitchers right now. Verlander is absolutely unconscious and Floyd doesn’t look comfortable out there.

I like the Tigers to open their second half in style.

They should tag Floyd for a long ball or two in the process.

Tigers vs White Sox prediction: Tigers 6, White Sox 2
